Thank you all for the compliments :) The registration should be working correctly now, Let me now if it isn't. Onto Collies, so does anyone know the answer? Are the Rough/Smooth a seperate breeding program or shared?

by beetree on 04 May 2007 - 21:05

Oli, According to my AKC book, (that many would have me throw away), The Standard is for Collies, which come in two varieties, the (Rough) and (Smooth). Unless the Collie people tell you otherwise, it appears the ONLY difference is in the coat type, and therefore they are the same breed. Hope this is helpful and accurate.

Apparently, the United States considers them the same breed, but the European countries consider them seperate breeds. Scroll down to "coat types" on this article: http://www.colliedogowners.com/articles/index.php/category/looks/

Hi Oli, I just tried to post a message in the Chessie section and it didn't show up. Just wanted to say you picked a great picture for the breed representative. We had one for years and still miss her greatly.

Americans consider both collies the same breed. Europeans don't. See link above.

Oli as a former programer, systems analyst, and corporate owner and CEO, I know the debugging help you are seeking on the individual breed pages. I belong to a PSA training group that trains everything from mixed bred pit bulls, american bulldogs, malinois, shepherds and a few other breeds. Because they are "working oriented", except in the beginning, when I took a lot of kidding for having "show dogs", they grew to respect my GSD's after they saw them do Sch work. However they gave my dogs even more respect when I began training them in the manner they trained their dogs. Wont go into the details here, but I only wanted to point out that owners of any given breed, AKC recognized or not, usually don't care about the other guys breed very much. Even on these pages, with the GSD people, there is "line drawn down the middle of the field" with the "working dog and shown line breeders" on opposite sides of the playing field and it seems always taking "pot shots" at each others dogs. Anyhow, when I clicked over to your Malinois directory, there will still ads appearing about the GSD and not Malinois. I'm sure thats just a carryover of your having copied the main functions of the GSD page and were just pulling up some hard written code attached. I also looked on the Rottweiler page and the same thing appeared. My guess is you will have to have a seperate "breed specific ad directory" to link to when each individual main breed page is brought up. You asked for help in debugging this, hope this observation can be of some value.
