I run the local shelter as well as doing GSD rescue. I WILL NOT put my shelter at risk by doing GSD rescue out of the shelter. No matter how MUCH I would like to help a GSD that comes in, I ABSOLUTELY stay out of the rescue portion. I will contact a rescue to come in and evaluate the dog. THEY must take on the responsibility. Once a dog is evaluated in my shelter, it then becomes MY responsibility and that of the shelter. I cannot and will NOT put the lives of hundreds to thousands of other animals that would be "adoptable" at risk by possibly being sued.
If the dog does not pass your shelters evaluation for safe adoption, you cannot put the shelter at risk. Any rescue organization that would take a dog AFTER it has been evaluated by the shelter, then puts itself at risk for liability. Just as you would if you eval and the dog does NOT pass the shelter's eval. You wouldn't then adopt the dog out.
It is hard, but you need to separate your two passions, otherwise you put dogs, the shelter, rescues, and the public at risk.

The good news is he has passed the evaluation. He is a very confident dog !! as described by our training director. and a dog that needs an expeirienced/knowledgable, and appropriate handler. Which is now what we will be concentrating on.
Thank You all for your input, It is appreciated.
I do have some folks helping me look for the "right" handler for this dog. Thanks again all.

Here is to you finding an experiamced handler for him. He could turn out to be a best friend to someone. I know first hand some dogs that have been physically abused can be saved and placed into strong loving homes. Then there are other's where their sprit is broken and it has done something to their mind, just has it would to a child who was abused. For the ones who have had to be sent to Rainbow Bridge, I can only hope that a loving, gentle hand is there to guide them.
