Blitzen, don't be too surprised. There is now approval in place to send fresh killed chicken to China for final processing and return to the US for sale. $$$$$$$$$$$ Look at how cheap you can buy "fresh" produce year round. Now start looking at where it's grown.

Just to be clear here; China receives "favorite nation" trade staus with the US of A...What does that tell you...???Kinda like with Bush getting most of his money from the Saudis who if my memory serves me correctly were just a little bit involved with the World Trade Center fiasco...Public awareness, who is kidding who when less than 50% of the population votes most of the time which means that most of our elected leaders received less than 25% of any vote...
As individuals we must go out of our way to protect the things we love and to always do what is right for us at the time...Sad to say but most people are scared to death of GSDs and could care less if one dies or is put into a shelter, its people like us who love the breed that must stick together and try and make those who are ignorant understand...One bad dog and all of them are branded as bad...Its like cops, get a ticket and they are the bad guys, get robbed and who do you call...???
You can forget about what the big dog food companies say, we must decide what our needs are and use your intellect to decide what is good, or bad and go from there...I have spent hours here on the internet reading about every brand of "premium" dog food known to man and for me its down to about 7 or 8 that I trust...For whatever its worth they are: Solid Gold, Merrick, Orijen, Timberwolf Organics, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul, Canidae, Innova...This list could change at any time due to circumstance beyond my/our control...I'm sure there are more, then there is always raw...I am no expert on anything but, I can read, listen and make as educated choice as is possible...
It used to be we lived within the slogan of "truth, justice and the American way", sorry but there is no truth, there is no justice and that has become the American way...OK Scotty you can beam me up anytime now...
Just some thoughts off the top of my head and by the way I have served my country for 6 years while I was in the service in the 70s...I feel I have the right to render an opinion on this country...I am and have been a "field" (working) biologist for over 25+ yrs and know a little something about animals as well as nutrition...Then there are the GSDs I have or had...I am no better than most and certainly worse than others...
Have a great day its always a pleasure to speak with most of you here on the GSD database...

Whats wrong with California Naturals Robo? I tried Solid Gold, my dog wouldn't eat it and they are the only food without a return policy where I buy. I havn't even seen Orijen here, Merrick just made a huge "Hello" localy, since this food scandal came about. I still can't find Timberwolf anywhere. Not all of the Chicken Soups have as good a formula as others so I am avoiding that brand. I feel they could change the formula at anytime, over to a less rated one without saying anything. I hate when companies do that!

In South Africa most Royal Canine products, in particular Vets Choice, produced between 8 March and 11 April have been recalled. More than 30 dogs have died from acute renal failure and many others have been seriously ill. The reason: Melamine poisening as a result of an additive imported from China. Royal Canine has publically agreed to compensate owners of dogs that have died.

Everyone, know that I have fed Royal Canin Maxi GSD 24 for many years with good results, and I have never used any of their other foods. I examined the Royal Canin website many days ago after the Menu Foods issue, and saw what was printed there.
In my opinion, the very serious issue with the tainted food ingredients in the Menu Foods' line of products has caused the manufacturers of canine and feline food to look much harder for foreign substances-some of that they never sought because they had no reason. Well, now EVERYONE who makes canine or feline food has a serious reason to examine the raw ingredients that comprise their product.
I have some information that I will neither discuss here nor by private e-mail, (no, I do not work for Royal Canin) at this time, but expect the F.D.A. to become involved, at least on a temporary basis, as deeply as they are involved with the manufacture and preparation of human grade food. This issue with the melamine and its derivatives being used in food components sourced from a foreign nation will cause a lot of scrutiny for some time, as it is not just the components of canine or feline food, but derivatives from that are used in some of the foods that we eat.
In the end, if the Chinese (or any other government) wish to sell us food (or medicinal) products then they must be forced to uphold at least the same standards imposed by our F.D.A. or not be allowed to make business here, and this is not negotiable.

That's good news Bob-O. I wanna know why the hell this wasn't standard before? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why it's cheaper to go out of country but why this rout? Why not just let Americans do it substandard? Government and Politics period, make me sooo sick I could scream!

This is a link to the Canidae site. According to them they use "NO" wheat or rice gluten and do not import any ingredients in their food. http://www.canidae.com/
