The dogs being shown and titled under the sv get the blessi ngs of the sv...so why are oversized dogs receiving V and VA ratings?

That is the grass roots problem, isn't it?

 

My point exactly, btw, I was not using SL to single them out as different from WL( contrary to some belief I do not see SL vs WL under every rock), I used SL to point out that a higher percent of them ARE surveyed and oversize is rampant in their ranks.....so how does survey lead to correcting oversize issue. If more WL dogs were surveyed and oversize was a major problem, I would have used them as example to get an explanation of how surveying can lead to correcting oversize problem.....whew!!!!

DQ them I say.......

joanro - No I do not mean 100% of Breeders but I do believe that what I said applies to the majority.  I have amended my post and I hope that now clears up that point.

Blitzen - I agree with you that the oversized and undersized GSDs need to be DQ'd. And to others that keep stating that working line people dont show or bother getting kore klassed, that is an incorrect blanket statement, almost like saying none of the show people train and earn working titles; IPO, HGH, FH. There are a lot (not all) of show line owners who work their arses off training to earn titles.

I know that the Universal Seiger/Siegran still has a lot of issues, but man do i hope this goes a long way to bettering the breed

 

Blitzen, in 2005 I took my , then, 18 month old GSL to the National Seiger show in Philli. The judge had him measured when he entered the ring because he was a big boy. At that age, he was within size limit. I don't know what they would have done if he was over, but I was told he would not be allowed to beshown if he was over sized. So maybe there are some sv judges who do pay attention to standard. Interestingly, twelve months earlier, I had him in the National Seiger show in Nashville, and at six months, that sv judge critiqued him as being 'small '........he barely fit into a four hundred crate on the way to the show and when I brought him back, I put him into a five hundred so he could stand easier.....that's Not a 'small' pup.

I have not seen one blanket statement about WL not getting their dogs surveyed. I have said that proportionately the SL survey their dogs more so than WL. Talk about taking one thing and extrapolating it to something else?!?!   This reminds me of why I seldom post anymore....reading comprehension and and folks that cannot discuss pros and cons without becoming defensive about what they like/ own! Joan, sounds like something that could a happen at an AKC show too. I once saw a judge call for the wicket in the Malamute ring; he was sure the dogs were all over sized. There is no size DQ in that breed, he thought he was judging Siberians, they do have a size DQ. Oops.... he was an all breed judge too.

A DQ woud be an absolute not left to any judge's interpretation - the dog is either standard size or it isn't. If not, out they go - DQ'd- the same as a male with one descended testicle. Or a dog with too many missing teeth, cropped ears, a docked tail, non erect ears, or a solid white coat, etc..  Those who don't breed to the SV standard aren't going to care much, but keeping the breed the correct standard size should be a very big concern for those who do. Most judges aren't going to go against the tide and penalize oversized dogs unless they have to.  I wouldn't suggest showing an oversize dog to a judge like Margit Van Dorrsen, but I doubt most really care especially if it's a Va dog imported from Germany.

We always have WL's at our local show. I think most of the WL people I have trained with breed survey and enter their dogs for show ratings.  We've done our BH's and AD's together and support each other.  I keep an eye on their dogs, they do the same for mine; some have both "lines" others I'm not sure about. I don't know what it's like in other areas. This year we hope to include a trial again and if that pans out, I'm sure we will see more WL's, some going for their surveys and show ratings. Personally I like it better when there are both lines represented at our show.

I do see a lot of posts here that say that breed surveys and show ratings are not important, maybe not, I wouldn't argue against that. Some of those WL breeders walk the walk by breeding good working dogs and proving them in other ways. Others only talk the talk. That may be why there is the feeling that many WL people don't care to breed survey or show their dogs for ratings?
