I own a female "black" colored German Shepherd myself (Sasha) and I can tell you despite what the breeder of my dog said, that my puppy would be a solid black when fully grown, that she is not. (And the breeder registered her with the AKC as black.) She has tan between her toes and a thin strip of tan on the back of her front legs as well as as a small white patch on her chest. So my dog is a bi-color, though, with the white spot I'd call her a tri. And on the dam Vogerland Pantera from that ad it shows a photo, look at her underside and the inside of her back leg in the photo and you will see a light creamy tan color. So she is either a bi-color or a super dark sable. My own dog Sasha has more black dogs (Plus Sasha looks more like a true black that washed out dam as well.) in her pedigree than that dam Vogerland Pantera and Sasha is clearly not a true solid black. So If they are saying Vogerland Pantera is then someone should tell them she's clearly not and to stop saying so as that's false advertisement. I can't read the ad myself in less I use a translator as I only know English, and a bit of German.

Danica,
It could be possible that your girl has "bleed through" as well as the dam. The only way of truly knowing what color she is, is to do DNA testing for coat color. This is actually fairly common to have bleed through on a solid black dog. The dog is still genetically black.

I second the bleedthrough. My dogs sire has bleedthrough on his legs.

Something I've noticed on some of those dominant blacks is that they get the "ghost markings" like a black and red would have... I even recall seeing one with the bitch stripe, though it was solid black otherwise.

In the picture of Vogerland Pantera, it looks to me like she is blowing her coat, not that she is not solid black. She's definitely not sable.

Blackthorn, that was what it looked like to me as well.. that brownish red of dead coat getting ready to explode everywhere.

I noticed Many of the dominant black have the saddle mask pattern the way a black panther has spots.

Maybe that's one reason the dominant black wasn't popular? And maybe that's why we would see the term "lacquer black" in German descriptions and some koer reports? That is, the dominant black perhaps isn't always a pure, shiny black and thus it was considered undesirable? No idea---just made me wonder.

Also, we know that these dogs only have one gene for the dominant black--maybe homozygous dominant blacks (in the GSD breed) are a clearer, darker black? Just speculating.

Christine
