Try Diatemaceous Earth

by clewsk9s on 22 July 2007 - 16:07

We have found that Diatemaceous Earth works great (and non toxic) for alot of problems - we spent over $1,200 trying to get rid of a tick problem and spent $32 on Diatemaceous Earth and it worked great!  Also, switched our female to a from a highly rated GSD food to Candidae and it has also benefited the female from food allergies, also supplement with raw meat.

I have been fortunate that I have only had one dog with an ear issue in many many many years. What worked for him, when the vets couldn't fix it (he already was on a correct raw diet) was THE POWER BLUE EAR TREATMENT. That stuff rocks. It is a natural mixture you make yourself. You can find it online.

My

My 1 yr old male was showing no signs of problems and one night around 2:00 am I woke to his collar jingling as he was going at his ear. I took a peroxide soaked cotton ball and proceeded to give him whatever relief I could, Out came a cotton ball of blood. Needless to say he was in the vets office the next day. Turned out to be mostly yeast with a little bacteria. So he is on drops for yeast, drops for pain, and antibiotics for the skin infection she also found, oh and the stuff for the allergies that caused the skin infection. Ears are an extension of the skin so allergies can cause ear problems as well. One expensive day at the vet. I use the cleanser from the vets office and since my Shep thinks he is a lab and I can't keep him out of the pool that is part of the problem even though it is a salt based pool, Go figure, They said once it clears up to use the drops a couple times a week and dry his ears every time he gets out of the pool. And use the cleaner like once a week, I wish I owned stock in the vets office :-(

I also changed dry food to Canidae and the redness in her ears has cleared up.  The Diatemaceous earth helps dry out the wetness from the pool too - my girl wouldn't stay out of our either.

I had a young male who started to have ear problems - took him to the vet and was told no infection no problem no treatment needed. Repeat this several times. Dog ends up with a hole in his ear drum and what for a long time seemed like permanent problems with his ears and a systemic infection.  Needless to say no longer my vet. To treat the systemic infection he had to be on Baytril for a longgg time wh/ just made the ears worse because it allowed 2ndary infections of fungal and yeast to bloom.

I tried all the vet remedies - Epti-optic , opticleanse etc etc and most products available in pet supply catalogs. Cleaned them regularly and tried the alcohol route, the oil route and even the dried powder route. None worked. I struggled with this for years until one day out of desperation I tried an ear oil from the local health food store. At the time  the company making it was called Medicine Wheel now they are Red Earth and it is called Nature's Ear Oil. One of the few products which did not send my poor fellow screaming in pain. Initially had to use on a very regular basis but got to the point that I could go months on end w/o using it and if he started to show signs of a flare a couple days treatment and away it went. I swear by the stuff and tho not needing it right now, keep a bottle on hand since it has a great shelf life.

I found this link on the web but like I said I just bought it at my local health food store ( Think it was cheaper there but you know it's one of those things that is cheap at any price 'cause it works).  Good Luck hope this helps.

I found some  ear stuff at Petsmart since most of my dogs ear problems are because he thinks he is a labrador retreiver and won't get out of the pool is yeast from being wet. This stuff goes in as a liquid and drys to a powder to dry the ears out. Haven't tried it yet. still clearing up his current infection. Ill let ya know how it works
