This is not a brain surgery. You do not need to be expert board certified radiologist in order to understand how to position a dog for x ray!!.
Read text below and if you do not understand call me , e mail me, PM me or best ask here and I will answer.
1. Up to down axis of spine, pelvis, and femurs are all parallel to each other.
2. L to R axis are Perpendicular to all Up to Down axis.
3. As far as positioning goes L is mirror image of R, Mainly look at the holes ( Obturator) on the pelvis and evaluate areas where on the radigraph the femur intersects the pelvis. The size, and shape of these holes and intersections must be identical.
4. knee caps must be visible on the x ray and must be in the middle of the knee in bull's eye fashion,
5. x ray-radiograph is in focus It is not fuzzy. Edges are razor sharp.
6. X ray-Radiograph film is properly developed. That means it must not be just gray but there must be black and white ( clear) area within the picture.
Here is links with pictures and more detailed explanation. :

If your vet's x ray does not follow above standards, then do not pay for it. Vet should redo crappy x rays for free. If he does not, then vote with your dollar and go to different vet.
That is all.

Axis reference. Almost perfect hips positioning and good radiograph quality. Knee on your right hand side is pointing slightly out and the other knee is slightly in :
