Fascinating article from the New York Times on the origins of AIDS: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/18/health/18aids.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
Apparently one of the big factors in its spread was the use of improperly sterilized syringes and tubing used to collect blood for transfusion.
And another relevant article that popped up in my search: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2034439/Lab-chimps-freed-caged-fior-30-years-injected-HIV.html
Believe me, I am NOT against the laboratory testing of animals, but strongly believe a lot of it is NOT NECESSARY, as was the case with these chimps. The research proved useless in helping humans. Because the chimps were infected with AIDS, they remained prisoners in the lab, as people were afraid of them.

SS, didn't go on your links, but Blitzen, as I understood, was asking about the origin of aids in humans. Anyway, I think this thread is now OT.
Thank you for your input.

Joanro, the link does cover the spread from chimps to humans. However, it never would have spread so fast if it hadn't been for the spread by blood from needles, etc. Sex is not the most efficient way of transmitting it. There are many examples of couples where one has AIDS and never transmits it to the other.
Keeping threads on topic in this forum is like herding cats, as Rik once pointed out to me.
Anyway, promise this will be the last of my OT posts...

The images of Dogs and monkeys were cute and fun.
the Aids link to chimp theory is tied to use of live Chimp organ cells as medium for polio vaccines.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilary_Koprowski#AIDS_hypothesis
British journalist Edward Hooper publicized a hypothesis that AIDS was inadvertently caused in the late 1950s in the Belgian Congo by Koprowski's research into a polio vaccine. The OPV AIDS hypothesis has been widely rejected throughout the scientific community and is contradicted by modern research on the origin of the disease.[9]

GSD Lineage, please read my link. It has nothing to do with the polio vaccine, and states that theory has been disproved. The hunting theory is apparently the correct one.
