I must have missed the comments stating that people wanted an "oblivious" dog to gun fire or where "sport training works for reality."

Shoot fire Slam, are you slipping??

by Slamdunc on 14 January 2013 - 00:01
Nans,
Obviously I am slipping...Perhaps, you could straighten me out; as it appears I am oblivious.

Elkoor, my dog hated a certain brand of computer printer. I got rid of it, and I can print any thing without him going nuts, now. Reminded me of your issue, ... sometimes I do think they hear some things .... and it is annoying to them, we just don't hear it, poor dogs.

>I'd really like to know how a mature dog reacts to gunfire when it's never heard it before. <
My dog had never heard gunfire and at 11months, I took him along to a clay pigeon shoot to get his reaction - there was none, he was just alert and looking round at all the things going on, then sat beside me completely at ease. I did introduce him to lots of different noises as a puppy and through his growing up by rustling paper bags, banging tins and making general sudden noises, if he showed any reaction, I would take my time to let him investigate the object that made the noise , perhaps moving it slightly at greatly reduced noise level so that he could see it wasn't a threat- he is pretty bomb proof now.
The only thing he showed a reaction to was the RAF jets doing low flying near our place. When they came overhead, he rushed out challenging them. I know...nuts!

Runag if those jets fly as low over you as they do past my friend who
lives on a Welsh mountain, then I sympathise with you and your dog.
LOUD ???

yep, I've actually seen the pilot in the cockpit - that was really scary!! I think they use our farm shed as a marker coming down the glen but that pilot had a near one and so did we. I could smell the aviation fuel. (Funnily enough, I really quite like the jets!! All that power!!!)

LOL
Nothing ever changes here!
This thread should have ended with Slams post, he described in detail..... how gunfire with pups/dogs is done correctly.

A question on the same subject different issue. What do you use for your gun fire? I use the winchester black powder 22 blacks there louder and more of a real gun shoot but have had people complain at trials that the gun is too load. When i get my dogs used to it i set up my steel plates and while feeding I use my 45. I also use a 12 gauge and 9mm at times so there is no suprise during trials.
