The chat function has a few issues. Since it updates every second it is impossible to go back and read earlier posts. I would love to use the chat feature, but it is slow and very frustrating.
If there is more than a few people talking it is impossible to follow a conversation. I am not complaining or bashing or anyhting else; just stating a fact. I like most of the new features of the site, I really like seeing who is in the chat but find it frustrating to participate. This is not an issue with my PC or Mac, but an issue with the chat.
FWIW

Look what happened when I tried to be the first one to post to the Newcomers Forum...
( I sure hope they got it back from the vet!)

is it possible to incorporate a photo optimizer (to reduce photos the required file size) into the insert program?
this would fix photo size issue.

Sitasmom: There is a photo optimizer. It's set to maximum size 8 Megabytes and reduce them in size to 800x600 pixels. (it was 600x400 pixels, but GSD Admin asked me to have it a little larger). I really don't know why it isn't working for you.
But it's working fine for others that post. (can check the picture upload size, it now never goes above 800 in width or 600 in height (600 / 400 for older pictures))
slamdunc, that's because it's a web based chat. Real chat program would allow direct communications between you and the server (i.e. bypass the browser and firewall).
Just a simple method to allow simple live communications. Because of that the chat window is a simple "refresh" (that is, its refreshing the window). There is a "pause" button to use if you want to stop the refresh (to do stuff like, read the history or copy text.
Beetree: Strange, Couldn't reproduce. Just posted the first message in the newcomer forum.

Oli,
Sorry about that! I think I know what happened... I think I never left the Topic window, and my intended post message got too long??? I lose the contrast between message box and background sometimes, when on the laptop unless I'm at a specific angle before my coffee.
I am not used to it, since the change. Surprised me about the vet message ... though...! Some of these gremlins are funny. I got the same funny 404 message on something else, I tried to do...so it seems to be a standard message every time I make a mistake! I'll remember that.
And the reason I think that, is I was going to try to post a new subject on the new forum, and when I went to the Topic box, my autofill kicked in! It's probably better you went first, any way.

I was looking for the "pause" button under bb codes in chat. This is all I could see:

Beetree, the pause is below the Supported BBCodes for me
by beetree on 16 October 2012 - 18:10
But you don't see it on the screen shot I just took, do you? How am I missing it?

by GSD Lineage on 16 October 2012 - 18:10
Beetree, you are right, only moderators have the pause feature.

THANK YOU, I thought I was going nutz for real!
