VKGSD,
I feel the same way you do.
In addition I perfer a dog that brings the defensive side to the work on matter how the helper is working the dog. Even with pery movements from decoy the dog still has the edge. The type that may not go for the sleeve 100% of the time.
Decoys are more on their toes when working this type.

True. Let's just say the helper cannot be slipping the sleeve unless he's sure I have my dog's line or collar! NOT a dog that's going to prance around and return to the helper to play tug with the sleeve.

atc237...
Thanks for the video...: )
What I notice is that the dog is staring at the helpers face...Am I right?
Being that the dog is focused on the helpers face rather then the sleeve is a sign of working in defense?...Is that true?...
I am trying to understand the differences, I hope you will bear with me...Thanks again...: )

Ruger,
Just of an interesting note, the dog in the video Atc posted is a half brother to the sire of my male. Dasty and Eick come from the same bitch.

Speaking of enthusiasm. This is an Eick daughter I have always liked for her enthusiasm.
Talk about a little pocket rocket!!

Ruger,
Lets say that the dog that does focus on the sleeve is definately in prey and the dog that focuses on the eyes could be in prey or defense to varying degrees.
It is difficult to quantify all of the behaviors in each dog that dictated the prey/defense ballence.
The generic signs that you may see of a dog in defense are hackles rising, ears are back, focusing on the sleeve, the sound or type of bark.
High pitch bark = prey/low pitch=civil minded defense
These are generalities only my GSD has the high pitch bark and while being naturally high in prey is more defensive in nature.
Think of it this way. When you buy the puppy if he is genitically (sp?) high in drive you can observe that. When this dog gets to be 1.5 years old you may see the civil/defensive behavior, depending on training and genetics. If he is able to display the civil, does that at that same time he will choose to drop all of his prey drive characteristics?
He will start to show a mix of both prey and defense.
My personal favorite though is just looking into the eyes of the dog. Everything that a person needs to know about the dog is in the eyes. People tend to develope that after training and watching a few dogs get trained.
