GSDPack, all depends what you meant by pissy? In UK, it means reeking of urine.

I believe she meant pissy as in a pistol, raging, angry etc ... :)

Lol, thanks Melba. Not come across the adjective in that context much.
GSDPack is absolutely right, my pup was damn right pissy in the crate!

Hi friends, sorry for my ignorance, but this awakens my curiosity. Why do you put a dog into a crate when you are at home?, in Argentina we never do it,  however I see it many times in other countries like UK and US (on TV), and I always wondered why it was.

By the way when I went to the kennel looking for a working dog I cuold see the puppies were separated from their mums since they were born, and the breder used to put the mums just for feed them. I didn't like that, but now I see that could have been useful, because although Fidu is very attached to me, he can be alone in the courtyard or other place smaller and he do not cry or bark, or becomes distressed, I wonder if it is for this reason or not.

Crate training is a good option if you have a active puppy and you cannot watch them 24hours round the clock.  Also it instills some discipline in them and give them a time to rest and play in your own terms (not the puppy's).

So Aces, how's your little one doing?  Is it working out for you and have you sober up yet? lol

A crate used properly is supposed to be the dog's safe place, his home. The idea is that it mimics the den, the cave, somewhere they go and know they will not be disturbed. However, this is not always the case with some owners, and many dogs are kept in a crate way too long, just because the owners do not want their homes destroyed or peace disturbed.

I am in the USA and only have one house dog who is a pet. I borrowed a crate during the puppy phase, but when manners were learned, gave the crate back.

In my country is the same, people buy dogs of medium or large size to live in a flat, and when they realize what  crazy  is to have a dog inside a flat, they give the dog to a dogwalker, and they became a plague everywhere, poor doggies, they need freedom of course but a dogwalker is not the solution (for the dogs) either.

puppy barking....

stand in front of the crate,
when puppy barks turn your back to the puppy.
when puppy is quiet turn around and give treats.
puppy learns that quiet is good.

when walking up to the crate,
puppy barks turn around and walk a few steps away
when puppy quiets face puppy and walk a few steps closer

ear plugs required!

My 8 month old still won't quit barking at night.  When you find out the secret, please let me know.
