Yes, that's my finding as well. I guess I'm just not satisfied with the diagnosis and worried that there may be something underlying if he felt as poorly as they said. I've seen this dog SICK and he acted almost normal.

I sure hate these kind of dilemmas.

Ive had alot of experience with kc. Ive also worked in the medical field for the past 25 years. If the URI is bacterial based (which is most likely is) it would not be of much concern to me that the female would get something from the stud dog. However if its viral I would want to know what it was before subjecting a bitch to it. The doxy is a concern and would most likely not expose a soon to be mom to it. I do not trust docs or vets when it comes to what is safe for people or dogs. I do my own research. Ive had dogs die from the "it wont hurt the dog" I no longer take anyones word for it.

The question I have is, which came first really the kc which turned into an URI or the dog was already sick with the URI, it was not dx'd until he was coughing. If its straight kennel cough no big deal but the fact that the dogs immune system is low and thats how he got the URI, would make me stay away. Ive had several dogs get kc and nothing more. The ones who got sick with secondary infections (ie URI) were dogs that had OTHER things going on and they couldnt keep the kc at bay.

Precisely, Bhaugh. I don't trust "it's fine." I am having blood work done on the stud to see what's going on. He just has over-protective guardians at this point who took him right to the vet the very day they heard him cough. I personally wouldn't have, probably, but knowing I had plans to breed to him, they thought it best to figure out what was bugging him asap.

I don't know why you would say his immune system is low, though. He got a cough 6 days ago and is reportedly 100% himself now. He had no clinical signs of anything else out of the ordinary, no fever, etc. Just that hacking occasional cough. That sounds like normal kc to me, though obviously I'm not comfortable enough to breed her to him right now. If he had led a "normal" life with "normal" dog exposure, I would be surprised he woud be susceptible to it at all, but he hasn't. He was diagnosed with URI, which the vet says is your average kennel cough, though I don't trust them for much. They gave him doxy to prevent any secondary infection as a result of the kc. I don't know why vets like to prescribe antibiotics for a virus, but that's how they are...

I am probably more hesitant about breeding to a dog on meds than I am a dog w/kc, especially if I was going to AI her. I'm bummed...and part of it is I think/know I'm being paranoid and over-cautious and I really really wanted to do this breeding.

I am surprised that the sound of that cough is not unsettling to you! I found it to be a body wracking variety for the poor dog. Also, it is the air borne spreading of the disease that is also a concern. When I called the vet, first thing in the morning because it was so alarming, it was so bad, he could hear the god-awful cough while I spoke on the phone, and was able to make a diagnoses! And I'm sure he knew exactly how infectious the disease is, so easily spread.

I don't live with him anymore. He is keeping them up at night, not me. LOL

I have seen lots of dogs w/KC. It's not really a huge deal. IME, mostly vaccinated dogs get it. I have never vaccinated a dog against it and yet when I brought a rescue home with it, only my uncle's dog who I was watching got sick. Not one of mine ever coughed. It's not a pleasant sound, Beetree, but once you've heard it, you're not really shocked by it. I have brought home many dogs w/kc and never had an issue with it in my own, except my Pit did get a cough once. Nothing else, just a hacking occasional cough.

My issue, as I've said before, is not knowing the origin of it or if it's truly kc and the dilemma of the antibiotics are what's making me step back, as much as it upsets me.

Hmmmmmm..... I think perhaps it isn't always about the dog's immunity......hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

What does that mean?

by beetree on 31 December 2011 - 15:12

That we have different threshholds to what makes a cough go past the nuisance mark.

HUH???????????????????????

Clueless. Please explain.

by Blitzen on 31 December 2011 - 19:12

For gawd sake, the term "nuisance disease" is simply an informal medical term that describes a disease that isn't likely to be or to become serious. Personal thresholds have nada to do with it. Either a disease is a nuisance disease or it's not.
