Bundishep -
this is what makes id'ing puppies difficult - when they are young (under say, 10 weeks) ALL dark bl/tan puppies and even black/red puppies may have black on the toes, or black feet. The key is knowing the genetics of the parents - black/tan parents won't produce bicolors, bicolor parent(s) will. Or just wait and see - if the puppies' toe markings fade away, or it develops any tan shadings on the face or behind the ears - not bicolor. Bicolors often get darker instead of fading, the toe marks get more distinct and clearly turn deep black.
some bicolor puppies are born looking like every other black/tan puppy. Others are born really dark, some so dark that the only way you can distinguish the puppy from a solid black is to look at the vent. Bicolor puppies even at birth will have a tan vent. Blacks will be black around the vent.
yes, all bicolors have tan around the vent.
A "bicolor" dog with a black vent is more likely a black dog with "bleeding" or tannish-grey shading developing on the legs, making them appear dark "smutty" bicolor. But genetically they are black.

I was alway's a bit confused on the exact specs. of what makes a Bi-Color. Let's all give eichenluft a big hand for very detailed and imaged description of what makes a true Bi-Color. Thanks Pete

Here's some more pictures for help in description. I know I learn better by seeing instead of reading description.
Here is Mohave as a young puppy. Her dam is sable/black and her sire is dark black/tan. It was unknown if the sire carried bicolor at the time, so at first I thought Mohave may be a bicolor. Now I know the sire did not carry bicolor recessive.

Mohave at 6 months or so - you can see she has tarheels still very black, but her toemarks are fading. I still wasn't sure, as bicolors can darken up - and no tan behind the ears so still was a question.

And a couple months later, her toemarks and tarheels faded away and she developed just a bit of tan shadings where bicolors would not have.

This is Troll, so he is a black and tan? Hard to see if his toes have stripes but I think not.

Bravo at ~13 months.

Troll appears to me to be a bi. His belly appears to be all black, and he has tarheels, and I think I see slight penciling on his toes. I don't see any tell-tale "B & T" marks on his face/head, either. Tough to be absolutely positive from that picture, though.

Hard to tell from the bad picture quality - but you can clearly see his tarheels, and as Jenni said, I think I see toemarks at least on one front toe :) - he looks bi to me.

Ya kind of hard to say on Troll but i would lean toward Troll being a Bi,the toe looks a bit more than just a black toenail, though not nearly penciled as some of the toes you see in more modern pictures of other dogs, would someone please lift up Trolls tail, thanks for everyones help and input and pictures posted I,ve learned alot, also it seems like since some will change color with age mistakes could made telling AKC what color the pup is to AKC if litter is registed at an early age
