Windy, do you really believe all that stuff you posted or do you just not feel like looking into it and doing some critical thinking? I can understand how in the midst of a busy life you'd rather just listen to a vet (trained by the folks who manufacture vaccines) to look out for the best interests of your dogs (I'm sure they care more about your puppies than their wallet, aren't you?), but I'd feel a lot better if you just said that rather than act as if you still believe thinking that is decades and decades behind, and it was even false then. Any decent vet will call bull$h!+ on some of these ridiculous vaccine protocols if they have even remotely decent ethics or have opened a veterinary journal since Reagan was President.
A responsible way to vaccinate if one must vaccinate is to titer, interpret, and vaccinate accordingly. Now, you have to be fairly intelligent to read a titer and interpret it correctly as to what it actually means, and there are gray areas. I won't get into that here, but say maternal antibodies wear off at 16 weeks, which much evidence supports. Some earlier, but it's entirely possible that they can last that long and proven in some cases. What are you (and I don't mean just you, Windy, but I mean, "you" in general...anyone who thinks this is a remotely good idea) doing vaccinating so early, like 5 weeks? You're no match for Mother Nature; that vaccine is defeated except for the chemical adjuvant (whatever toxin that may be, used to stimulate the immune system to more rapidly produce a response- did you know that, Windy? With every shot you are injecting poisons like mercury along with the useless virus that will quickly be squashed by the protection their dam gave them? Did your vet make you aware of this ugly fact? I have my guess.
Next, just how long do you think it takes to develop immunity? Several hours? You leave the SuperVet with your SuperPups and out into the world they go! Socializing here, there, and everwhere. Oh, how wonderful their temperaments are assured to be! Gee, and they never get sick. It must be all those SuperShots! What a wonderful system that is! Um, no. They don't get sick because their dam has already protected them well. Don't get me started on what the hell a 5 week old pup needs socialization in stores for...unless you're really breeding some sketchy temperaments, which I'm sure you're not.
What did animals do before this "vaccinate everything over and over starting at first breath" mentality existed? Oh, that's right, they lived well into their teens and twenties (still do in other countries...see Oli's posts!) and we didn't have these major epidemics like parvo. Yes, folks...anyone care to delve into why parvo is so widespread and deadly now? Anyone, anyone? Don, I see your hand up. SSG? Either of you like to share your opinion with the class?
Oh, and whew! I really appreciate you not pressuring me to vaccinate my puppies, Windy. I don't think I could take the pressure. I'm a rather delicate flower.
I know my sarcasm is probably not appreciated, but I'm trying to make a point, a point that seems to be lost if I am anything other than bitingly direct. I'm not trying to be a raging bitch (but I am what I am, lol), but trying to get people to open a medical journal and open their minds and leave the safety zone of "my vet cares about my dog just as much as I do and his clinic is non-profit."
I have to see my son off but am coming back (I know most of you can't wait!) with some lovely reading for those of you who want to know more. For the rest of you, it's optional- you don't have to read it.

So you believe the world is flat???????????? Hmmm could be!
I go with what makes sense. It doesn't make sense to me to over vaccinate when all you need is one shot to take for possibly a lifetime of immunity (which can be tested for). Smarter vaccinating makes more sense as does keeping the immune system at an optimum level in the first place.

Und guten morgen to you Jenni78 :)!
I only have one question. I thought you said you were tired of typing this stuff???? More of comment I suppose.
I thought you were a little hard on the socializing thing. My take on it is different but 5 weeks is not too young.
Edited to say: Ok ok I should clarify I wouldn't take a 4 or 5 week old pup into petsmart or do what most people call socializing.

Wpool, your analogy of scientists believing the world is flat, actually works against you. You are the one still listening to the old "the earth is flat" scientist. Plenty of $ is spent on research so that we can evolve and progress. Maybe if your vet sold a few more bags of science Diet he could get some $ to go back to school and update his knowledge.
And like Jenni, "the bitch" said, your socialization program at 4 weeks is a whole nutha thread!

Jenny,
Yep, you know this thread isn't why don't you do vaccinations MY WAY. This thread is Whats YOUR vaccination plan for YOUR dogs.
I will vaccinate and will NOT REQUIRE that you vaccinate.
nuff said on my end I think.

For Sporty,
I take my guys to the feedstore, local post office, small country store, and schutzhund training. I don't really socialize them around other dogs so much as noise, people, traffic and schutzhund activity. I do this so they can be imprinted for their future requirements. I don't like petsmart for socializations because I can't cotrol the whole situation. Petsmart here has some interesting charactors that I would rather not expose my dogs to as puppies. Just fyi.

SSG didn't eat his Wheaties and appears confused. I will clarify because I'm such a nice gal.
On socialization, I didn't mean you can't or shouldn't take tiny puppies out. What I meant was that you certainly shouldn't have to take a pup into stores to ensure temperament. I recall having a 5wk old pup on my lap at my family's bar when I had lunch w/family, and other inappropriate places for a little pup. Having them with you is great- my point was pumping them full of poison in order to take them out for what is deemed necessary socialization a bit silly.

Windy, I'm not so much typing for you, as a your mind is closed tighter than a steel trap. I am posting because there are people who read this who really don't know and are interested in improving how they care for their dogs.
I really am working on finding some good links for those of you who are interested.

I've come to learn, that vaccination regimens are quite a subjective thing in the dog world. I can only speak for my personal experiences & thoughts, but after puppy shots and their one year booster (I believe) dogs are pretty much covered for their lifetime. Do I actually practice this? Nope! Why?...because society dictates, that I must keep UTD on my vaccinations IF I want to do anything with my dogs. IF I want to live like a hermit, and shut my dogs off from any human or K9 interaction in this world, I can get away with never vaccinating them. But, if I want to kennel, groom, partake in workshops, classes etc., ...the first thing I need to produce is proof of vaccinations.
Indeed vets are in the vaccination business to make $$$...they are sales people just as much as they are animal doctors. However, I have had experiences with some very practical vets, who've actually questioned me, as to why I really need to continue administering boosters to my 13.5 y/o dog. Damn good point...but...what recourse to I have, if I need to place him in a kennel? No kennel (in my jurisdiction) will allow dogs to occupy space in their establishment without UTD shots. C'est la vie.
Personally, I think our society totally over-vaccinates. In fact, so much so, that it may be creating alot of auto-immune cases in all kinds of breeds, that weren't previously there. Anyhoo.....JMHO!

I found a schedule I like, although I would like opinions on whether less would OK? ( just the 16 and 20 week vax)
16 Weeks--Parvo
20--Weeks--Distemper
24 Weeks--Parvo
28 Weeks--Distemper
6 Months--Rabies
1 yr--Parvo and Distemper for lifetime immunity....with titers test.
Would you also vaccinate for adenovirus as a pup? or wait until 1 year? or not at all?

If the virus takes then there is no need for a second set. Unless for some reason you wouldn't want to titer. You can titer 10 days after giving the first set. Then titer again at 1 year. Up to you I guess.
