My personal dogs go out in a large gravelled run off the grooming room. It has a 'puppy run' that is roofed over, so they have shade and protection from bad weather.
The # 1 thing on our agenda for next spring is getting that @#$%^!!! gravel run paved! It is a terrible PITA! You cannot sanitize it properly. The dogs dig holes, and track i gravel and mud. As it isn't sloped properly, you cannot even hose it down sufficiently to get rid of the smell! We would have paved it already, except repairs to the leaky roof had to take priority. :( (They are tearing the roof off as I type...)
Yup, agree with Hans 100%. Concrete is the ONLY way to go! If there is any grass in the run, your dog will either dig it up or kill it by peeing on it. We put down wood platforms in the boarder's runs for them to lie on in the winter. That would be a good idea, or make a nice bed for him in the garage.
Do you have an automatic garage opener? If you do, just be warned...there's a Shiloh shepherd I know of that learned how to work the garage door opener! The owners had to relocate the button so he couldn't get to it... LOL!!

Maggie,,,,,Prince is in his cage next to my bed at this point, as he is only 11 months old and very curious still...
Sunsilver.....Yes, the gravel is high maintenance for sure,,,,I have to add new gravel every year to keep it thick enough to drain well. We do have a nice sloping grade so a good power wash with bleach and hot water cleans the area pretty well. We will probably look into getting concrete in the near future. My husband is going to build a raised wooden bed to keep in the garage.....Our attached garage does have an automatic opener that I will disconnect when he is out there. ....
note....We have a large detached pole building for cars and garage things so his area is free of anything dangerous....In the future we will build an indoor kennel in the attached garage area. For now I am just trying to make do with what is in place......Thanks for all suggestions.....keep them coming...
