"Vickie, I have to agree w/Ace here. I would see $600 and not even look at whole ad, probably. Honestly, when I see someone advertising dogs/pups that cheap, my only thought is "aw, poor babies." "
That's crazy. You wouldn't even look at the pedigree?????
It depends on the area of the country. Dogs that easily go for $1500 - $2000 if the Northeast might not bring that price in Central Texas. Same quality, same care, same good breeding - just different areas of a very large country.
Same with horses. You can spend $15,000 in VA and PA and get the SAME THING in IL or MO and only pay $5,000.

That's crazy. You wouldn't even look at the pedigree?????Well does the pedigree matter that much if the pup is say $600 (no offense to Vickie's friend who is trying to do a good thing)? Some breeders often say that they have working pups for $1500 but will also have some for way less that that who are suitable to be just good pets that are the same pedigree.

I thought with dogs prices really don't fluctuate in different parts of the country being that many people will travel or get a pet shipped. And then you have many who look in Europe for what they want as well.

Daryl, I'm starting to think you have a crush on me.Naw, that would be your gun. I don't remember much what you look like, and was afraid to open the "What do you guys think of these hips?" thread to find out.

I have never seen a big difference in prices, or maybe I should say since the INTERNET, I have not seen big fluctuations in different geographical areas. I thought that's why God made planes. I hardly ever sell a dog locally; people are LOOKING for a certain dog and they buy it where they find it and have it shipped. I've certainly never bought a dog locally, and though I did find one local horse, I shipped my other one. When you want a certain quality, you buy it where it sits; the chances of finding it in your own backyard are a lot lower.
Now, if someone doesn't have a big internet presence, then that may change things.
If I'm looking for a puppy, then I might click a $600 ad just out of curiosity, and I might look at the ped, but I'll be wondering what's wrong with them the whole time, and thinking that whoever has them probably has no clue what they're doing, and is out to make a quick buck, selling puppies cheap. (Vickie, this is totally hypothetical and in no way meant to be applied to your friend).
When I said I wouldn't even click on it, I meant like the ads at the top of the pages on this site, not if I was actively looking through classifieds. Hope that makes more sense, Tess.

Yes, I hear you, Jenni. I know what you mean. That does make more sense - you can't look at every ad that pops up.

I have seen it but just can't find the site. It was posted in a thread here a number of months ago. Highest I can find right now is $65k and that price you can find on a lot of sites.

I am guilty of this as well. That is the first thing that comes to mind as well. I also have seen some pups get priced at $2,000 and in a few months the pup hasn't sold and I see the price drop and it makes me wonder what's wrong since they said the pup is "agreat, can't find anything better than this, etc." Pricing is tricky I see. You don't want to come off too low b/c people will think something is wrong and you don't want to be too high where folks think that your nuts by asking so much.

I found a dog named Remington for $85,000. I wish I could remember what site the $250,000 dog was on I saw last year. I have dogs I wouldn't sell for a million dollars, but to sell a dog to the public for $250,000 is hilarious. Unless maybe he has a gold prosthetic leg.

I will add this. it depends on who you are buying the dogs from. I will say i was lucky enough with my last set of dogs that I found a breeder and friend too. I very very accomplished breeder. Went back and ended up with a few more.
Not only did i get the dog, I learned so much and had so much help for how to maneuver through this "German shepherd dog world" that it was priceless. From who to train with, to having the breeder handle the dog at local, regional and national shows. ETC ETC.
So if you are paying XXXX, you should be getting a true professional trainer, breeder, handler, gsd encyclopedia, knowledge of bloodlines, etc etc. That is more then worth the price of the dog.
I am new to this forum, but I see so many questions that I learned the answers to from the breeder. The breeder knew what I needed to know and informed me. Then answered every question every time. I have yet to find any information that person gave not to work with the dogs.
