You brought up feeding "more fats" to the pregnant females, but beyond that I'm really clueless to what you're talking about. Like any other pregnant bitch in my care, I feed an assorted raw diet. Why would you assume I overfeed or use steroids? I do however, supplement the raw with Total* Canine, although that's no different from any other litter I produced that had very opposite gender results. http://www.totalsupplements.com/dogabout.htm
Moons, what the heck does "natural" mean, or "organic" while we're at it. Feeding your dog at ALL is manipulation by unnatural means. Selection of breeding stock isn't exactly "natural selection", either. Ahh, but it is!!

mmm I believe that studies show (and yes i will have to find them) that as with humans the male determines the sex of the offspring while the female determines the size of the litter.
That being said shouldn't be playing with the diet of the stud dog then? Or are yall proposing that by playing with the diet of the female that you may increase or decrease the chance of the zygotes developing into a fetus dependant on it's already alotted sex?

It's true in other mammalian species, that stress, different food type & availablity, body condition at time of conception and rank/dominance of the female or male in a group can produce different sex ratios, but I wonder if any studies have been done in dogs...

Organic is the new magic bean..........lol
I get a kick out of organic as a term and it's use today in marketing.
I am saying that supplements to enhance anything are what I would call un-natural and they might as well label them organic while they are at it. There is a natural source for any pill that calls itself a supplement.
You are correct, humans selecting breeding stock is not a natural selection.
My point is if you intend to improve what you have, don't do it by artificial means.
I take issue with many breeding practices and human interference with births.
I was frowned upon for letting a bitch give birth outdoors in winter, I see people raising dogs in air conditioning.
People cannot bare the thought of culling.
I do not see any reason to control the sex ratio in a litter.
I dunno, I'm just strange I guess.

ShadyL,
I think during gestation period is when there may be a chance if any, to manipulate the sex's of the litter.

A little off topic i know, but there is evidence that suggests that in humans the female embryos are more resilient than male ones.
If you ever research an incident of toxic waste dump in the love canals where a whole community was effected a significantly higher number of babys that made term that year were female. ( Not saying they werent affected, but most of the males ended up as a miscarriage)

Max, you mean after conception takes place between sperm and egg? I don't understand how that's possible except if the certain sexed embryos were absorbed or spontaneously aborted.

by ShadyLady on 29 July 2010 - 19:07
Yes, Max, I've read about a study done in Norway (I think) that showed how male embryos were more fragile than female in relation to maternal uterine stress.
