How do we eliminate unsoundness?  Start by refusing to place any dog that shows any level of unsoudnness, however caused.  If the owners insist on showing unsound dogs they will soon get tired of paying good money to be thrown out.  And if they then insist on breeding from them, they will wonder why people are not buying their puppies.

Doppelganger - Pray tell us all, what will the Kennel Club do to STOP GSD "accredited breeders" - who do NOT exhibit their dogs, from owning and breeding UNSOUND GSD, and selling puppies the resultant litters?

I will answer this question.
absolutely nothing!

Will they register them and actively promote these accredited breeders and specially promote the sales of their puppies? A GREAT BIG YES!

That tells us all a great deal about the Kennel Club.   HYPOCRITES!

"Who has said that they think soundness does not matter? NOBODY!

Well possibly.....John Ward when he said :

So forget all this unsound and bad health stuff!!

Dingo... NO, what John was saying was that one does not necessarily = the other.  Many dogs with poor hips are as sound as you like, some dogs with good hips are unsound.

I rather foolishly thought (for a while) that you actually had something to offer, Dingo... it would seem not!  You're astute enough to pick and choose what you "quote", but you don't attend our shows and fail to inform us of where it is that you see all the Shepherds that YOU consider to be incorrect.  We really don't need another self appointed expert who clearly thrives on......................... on what?  What is it that you want?

Can someone lend me some blinkers so I can see showline GSD's the way some of the breeders in the UK do?

Not picking and choosing what I quoted above. Just clarifying. Certainly if that was what JW meant he really, really should have put it better. It came across as very dismissive of both soundness and health.

Picking and choosing what I quote or comment on, is something which seems sensible to me, I see little point on joining in any discussion for the sake of it. You may not like my opinion, I may not like yours, but to me that's what life is all about, and I believe it is a public forum. More and more evident is that unless everyone on here agrees with the 'showline' and it's 'correctness', then the less welcome they become, and the less politely they are treated. I am not asking you to agree with me.

I have in the past been to GSD shows, and I generally don't like what I find, but then you know that I am not a fan of the showline and it's developments. A friend of mine who is very well versed in the breed (and favours showline) goes to many and sees it all getting worse. It's far too murky a world for me to want to paddle around in, and that's my choice. BTW (How do you know whether I am at a show or not?). I can see pictures, videos, read articles and books written by prominent and qualified people in the breed, and get enough information to form an opinion, not to mention what I read on here of course. Who was it on another thread said the camera never lies. Footage that can be stopped, slowed and paused gives far more information about what is actually going on than a dog moving quickly or straining around being double handled IMO.

What do I want?  Someone to breed the GSD back to the dog it should be, as futile as that appears to be if I am looking to showline breeders to do it. However, not all breeders are showline, and there are some here who I think breed high quality dogs that are more correct than some of the showline's interpretation.  Health testing (mandatory) we have already established I am in favour of. I want to see someone who wants to take the breed forward in both areas of conformation and health, not an either or, and  I want to see the GSD become a better dog than it has been turned into in the last 40 years. I live in hope.

If what you say is true Dingo... make the effort to attend this Sunday!  You'll see just how many dogs are your ideal.  We're not closed to the public!

There are quite a few on this forum with no interest in S/L dogs Dingo and I'm not aware of anyone treating them less than politely, as a rule.  Oh, some of us "go off on one" now and again, but it's all part of life's rich tapestry....... or something like that, right?
