And since Im a gluttun for punishment today, I contacted Patchwork shepherds and asked them to answer why they thought breeding a dog less than a year old was a good plan. I received less than a favorable response (3 unfavorable responses actually). I was called a snob, which is a first for me ever and Im over 40.

Since when did the word snob change to include asking a breeder to step up and do the right thing? Ill be a snob any day.

I am curious as to what people think about giving discounts to people who will definitely work to title a puppy. Also, what about a discount to a buyer purchasing a female willing to allow a breeding to the bitch when ready.

I imported a Sch1 bitch (Xin vom Mittenhauser- Hof) bred to Tuareg von Bad-Boll and am asking $1200 (USD) for the puppies. I am willing to discount for the above stated reasons. Am I asking too much? Am I setting myself up for a nightmare in offering a "deal"?

I have a couple of puppies for sale right now and am asking $600 to $800 respecitvely.  If I know the person and I know they will title the dog then I do discount or even give them a puppy at no charge if they are in a local Schutzhund club.

Davren & Taos Spirit,

I paid for all my puppies and I believe a good breeder deserves some pay back for what he/she spent on foundation dogs, but tell you what your attitude and your generous offer makes me wish we had clubs here for training and titeling dogs, I would have jumped on such an offer simply because it is a proof that what you are producing must be very good and you know it.
Also I would relieve you from the shipment cost, lol

Ibrahim,

I see it this way.  If you GIVE a couple of puppies once in a while to people you KNOW are going to title them, it's an advertising expense for me and I have the good feeling of blessing someone and a breeder has a limited amount of time to title thier own stock.

I absolutely offer discounts to experienced working homes. I also have an incentive program. Various titles earned with your dog have a  price tag, so to speak, and earn the buyer a credit with me. They incentives are stackable, so someone can eventually earn a free puppy from me altogether with enough titles.

There is no reason why anyone who only wants a companion should have to pay over $1500. I tell most people who are looking that prices for a pup from good lines and proven parents should start around $1000.

The problem is the market for GSDs pup is completely messed up. A small handful of breeders decided they were selling the prada of GSDs and started asking 2,500-4,500 for pups. Subsequently, everyone else raised prices, and it just went down the line. I saw on ad for puppies taped on the freakin' Arby's drive-thru speaker for GSD pups with "OFA'ed grandparents" "DVM on premises" for $1200. Absolute BYB poorly bred dogs are going for $700-900 by me.

I am not into multiple prices. All of my puppies come with papers and a guarantee whether you want it or not, because that's what a quality pup SHOULD come with. The quality of a dog does not change with a piece of paper. The two prices crap is a scam, designed to get in buyers who "don't care about papers" and also accomodate those who want to "get their money back" by letting Daisy have a few litters with Duke down the street. Makes me sick.

Just to clarify. My multiple prices $600 and $800 are 2 different litters. The $600 is an older puppy and needs to be placed. I am not and do not play the mulitple price game depending on registration(full) or no registration(limited).

 Cindy and KCzaja,

Thanks for sharing your perspective on prices. I like the incentive idea as well and agree about the titles on offspring help promote the sire, dam and breeder. It makes for great advertising and proves the potential is real.

I have actually given away horses in the past to young girls-neighbors-or folks with a reputation for integrity. I always recall being a child and begging for a horse. My parents are both paraplegic and felt it would be too much to handle. However, when I was nine, someone passed along a pony to me. I will never forget the immense joy and self confidence that pony provided.

Ibrahim, I wish you were near a training club. I am sure there are many people who would give you a great break on the price of a puppy.

Davren,

I have given away a lot of dogs. I also got burned by a lot of people getting a dog from me for a fraction of the cost (100 bucks) with the intent to work it. Couple of them were RESOLD for 4 grand, some of them became pets for numerous reasons, and only one got a SchH title.. STUPID ME.

Those were my friends. and I mean.. they WERE...
Friends will pay for a dog because they kow how much effort I put into what I do. They will recognize and respect my price.

I still place puppies for free, but they better not sell them or ask me for papers. If they put all the work they promised I will release the papers. Otherwise, no deal.

I would love to make deals. But after I got burned I learned my lessons and I act accordingly. I have only couple of people I can trust with free puppies.

OK..... Devil's advocate here:)
Say I have 2 lovely bitch puppies for sale. 2 prospective homes that I know, and check out. In my imaginary scenario, they are both quailfied owners,
One prospective home will likely work and title the puppy and may well breed her or sell her.
The other home is a wonderful, active, pet home with every intention to spay. Just wants a pet.

What is the problem with giving the "pet" home a nice puppy on limited registration for $500, and the working home a nice puppy with full registration for $1000?
Pet people get blasted all of the time for buying from less-than-stellar breeders, but if I were looking for "just a pet," no way would I spend $1000.
