Consider it like this though. Cesar correcting that type of behavior.....I look at it like this. Sure they may be excited to see you, showing excitment jumping, trying to lick you (submissive type behavior which is normal)......but I know with my pack, and watching other dogs, the puppies don't always have to jump up to reach the mouth of the adult since we are taller. Regardless I see a lot of adult dogs correct this behavior from the pup by biting them, or putting them down at times with their mouth. I also know a lot of dogs who show this type of excitment and then they become dominant if they become too excited....so what starts out as an excited submissive dog turns into a dominant dog because of an excitment level that was too high. Theres a young dog currently staying here who is like that (young dog), and my guys correct him if he gets too excited. He starts by being submissive, licking, tail wagging and then he gets more and more exicted.....and then he goes into trying to dominate and they correct him. Of course we can do it in a different way, redirecting the behavior or asking them to do something different.

GSD... you're right in that... Cesar's methods aren't really aimed at puppies, but more at older dogs, who have been allowed to misbehave and need correction, not just training to regain the upperhand and learn a different way of interacting with their people and/or the public. The humans as well as older dog pack members need to set limits with pups as they grow up. Ikon is very respectful to our older (10 yr) female who regularilly hands him his hat and dumps him on the ground. Though he's much more athletic and strong he allows her to dominate him. He also tolerates our older male (altered) though the female ties right into the older male if he gets rough with Ike. She is definately the peace keeper and lawgiver around here.
I've no real issue with Cesar Milan's methods... but am conserned with the overnight experts who have seen 2 of his shows and now think they know how to read dogs and "Be the Alpha"... I've known a number of dogs who could set them streight... and as sweet as my pupper is, what he accepts from me, or the older female shepherd here, he would not from a stranger, or an outside dog.

Oh, that face! He's going to be hard to say no to. What a doll. Those eyes are saying soooo much. Be strong, don't give in and be firm but fair with him. He'll be super some day! I just want to squeeze him! It's been a long time since mine was that little.
