They told you that coming into a heat cycle didn't matter?  My girl came in the day we went for our scheduled appointment.  The vet had me wait almost three months longer to make sure that hormonal changes did not affect her x-rays.  She also went good.

Per the OFA
"Radiography of pregnant or estrus females should be avoided due to possible increased joint laxity (subluxation) from hormonal variations. OFA recommends radiographs be taken one month after weaning pups and one month before or after a heat cycle. Physical inactivity because of illness, weather, or the owner's management practices may also result in some degree of joint laxity. The OFA recommends evaluation when the dog is in good physical condition."

The specialists told me that she was so bad that it didn't really matter how close it was to her heat cycle. The best she could possible get was borderline.

Just glad its over and we don't have to worry about this anymore....
