I have to tell you all about this guy that brought his six mo. old puppy to our club for an evaluation last weekend. This poor puppy was so afraid of everything and everyone and he kept making comments that the breeder told him that if he did Schutzhund with her that it would make her a better guard dog.  He said that she has already been in 3 dog fights, at six months are you kidding me.  and that he just wanted a dog that was trained enough that if a kid jumped over the fence into his back yard and the dog was attacking them that he could have enough control to tell the dog to platz.  I guess the breeder told him that all GSD's are aggressive and that Schutzhund training was the best way to settle them down.  He asked me if I could help him find a stud for this bitch when she was ready to breed, I told him that he would be an idiot to breed her because of the aggression.

I can't believe that people are that dumb.  Well yes I can.

Had an email forwarded to me yesterday from a friend and it just tersely read

"How much for a bitch?"

So I suggested my friend replied asking how long he wanted her to bitch for as she charged by the hour.

Well, I thought it was funny

Vom Marischal is correct, When i was a Kid it was also believed that a male if he fertilized a woman, and she had his Baby then further kids would or could also be his even if she was with another male, We were all Backward then , but not as Backward as we are today

In some states it is still the law that if you are married to one man, regardless of the actual parentage any children born during the marriage are automatically the husband's children.  You have to go to court to have his name removed from the birth certificate.  I've worked in some interesting jobs (mental health field) where I had to help a woman figure out how to get child support from the correct man.  Perhaps that's where some of the misinformation comes from.  Of course, someone had to come up with the idea of that law in the first place so it's hard to know where the stupidity really started.

Hi Opal... I think that law is most states, I wonder if they are going to change that.
Doesn't it seem foolish that even if father and mother are estranged and living states away, if they are not legally divorced, the father has to go to the hospital at the time of the birth and sign papers saying he is not the father, or his name goes on the birth certificate?! It is really a stupid law, IMO.

Here, I'm pretty sure that whatever the mother tells them to put on the birth certificate is what goes on it. To get a name put on or taken off does require a court hearing.

My BC was changed when my mother's husband adopted us kids...But now I want to have it changed back so that my BC has my real dad's name on it...And I'm told I may have to go to Arizona, to the county in which it was issued originally, to have a hearing and get it changed back...DOn't know...Rather do it by mail.

Anyway, the superstitions from years ago are still rather pervasive, which leads to some seriously funny stories.

At least the BYB I got my first Shepherd, Prince, from, didn't give me any funny stuff about bring him in to breed any bitches, or about the breed...She was straight with some of it, even if her hip guarantee was written on the back of a number ten envelope, right beside the "shot" record....

Crazy, isn't it, what people will believe?  We have come so far, but in so many ways, we are even dumber now than we were a hundred years ago.

I have to share a funny...my mother was visiting a friend who's little foo foo bitch had been bred.  When she got ready to leave they found the little foo foo going at it with a neighbor's mutt in the front yard.  Mom's friend was under the impression that foo foo wouldn't stand for another dog once she had been bred so she wasn't concerned about her running loose.  The funny part was the friend grabbing up a broom and swatting at the dogs yelling, "Whore- Whore!!!" at her foo foo.  Mom said she about busted a gut laughing.  This was about 45 years ago.

Kaffirdog...that was funny!!

As far as BC here, if the mother won't give the name of the father they will put "unkown" on the BC even if he is known.  They will not leave it blank.

Just heard a new one today - a black palate (roof of the mouth) is a "true sign" of a purebred GSD.

Now, I'm aware that it's not unusual for GSDs to have black/dark spots on the tongue, but mouth color isn't mentioned in the standard.  I don't have a good foundation in the genetic aspects of coat color, but I thought that gum color was related to coat color.  Can someone please point me in the direction of good info on this?

I had to check, and Georgia's gums and palate are black, but she's a solid black GSD.
