Hodie -- it is good to see you posting again. The subject matter is so sad; what a horrible disease. I knew that you would be able to provide insight into this disease.

To give an update my friends put their GSD down in February. It was very difficult for them, Hodie really helped out and offered some excellent advice which made a hard decision easier.

Hi Jim,
It is very hard decision your friends made, the only ones I have seen where in the sinus and was flushed with itraconizole, the systemic ones are usually put to down due to not being caught fast enough before they get to us. Really suckie disease.
Always,
Cee

There is another fungus that is going thru the Northwest, crytococcus gattii, Oregon, Wahington Idaho, Northern California. From what I have read this is a witch. should be aware of it, so if dog or human becomes sick can have Vet/Dr's check for it early.

Jim, so sorry to hear about your friends dog, give them my deepest sympathy. Good to see you back posting maybe you could persuade Hodie to return as her help is sadly missed. I have tried with no luck so far. I hope in time your friends find room in their hearts for another as they sound as though they are the type of owners all GSD deserve.

Malshep,
Yes, this was systemic and misdiagnosed for a couple of weeks. It was really heartbreaking for the family. The vet "a specialist" made my friends feel guilty and and just kept experimenting, missing or ignoring all of the symptoms. They removed one eye and sent it off for testing and wanted to remove the second eye and do more tests. It had progressed through the lungs and was systemic. There was no hope for the dog, but sadly the vet never expressed this to my friends. We discussed the prognosis and I helped them make the decision to put the dog down. Hodie was very helpful and definitely made the decision easier. My friends went to a different vet to put he dog down as they wouldn't return to the "specialist." Two weeks later the "specialist" called with the results of the tests and asked how the dog was doing. You'd think they would have known from the tests.......
Thanks to everyone who offered kind words, advice and well wishes. It is appreciated.
