Alyssa Myracle

by Alyssa Myracle on 21 March 2009 - 22:03

Well, my little DDR dog got to try her hand... er, paw, at herding today.
She did great; I was really impressed at how naturally it came to her.  I was also quite please at how well she recalled off the sheep.

Her first quasi-working title.

Alyssa, I'm not saying your girl is bad at all. I think she is very pretty myself. All I did was answer your question as to why I personally don't like Sven.

Jenni78, I didn't blame everything on Sven just said that Sindy and Sven were banned from the SV for a good reason. I'm also NOT saying that ALL his progeny is bad just saying what he can and has produced.

Awesome report on the herding.  My girl is 'sort of' similar lines and was the same way on sheep.  Interested but not crazy, did some nice bordering work and could still call off.   We loved herding camp last year, looking for sheep of our own this year.  She was very thoughtful at first, figuring out the details of the game, how things work and move.  Fun stuff to watch come out, knowing it's instinct and just "in there"...

did you get any pictures??

Kelly, I didn't think you had said anything against my girl, and I greatly appreciated the feedback on Sven.

The herding post was just random, and not in response (or defense) to your posts re: sven.

Okay, so where's a full report on the herding--how many dogs, which breeds, observances of breed differences, etc. Were there any Briards? Some of these herding instinct tests at Ewetopia used to be very well-attended 2-day events.

WOW I love her coloring and the expression on her face. Do you have a stacked picture of her?

Lets see...  Kerry Southern was there, as were several other GSD folks, and a good contingent of Twin County (we were hosting the event).

My mother actually attended with her Standard Poodle, who also certified.
Several corgi folks were in attendance.  Two Malinois.
Plenty of the cattle dog breeds.
One Old English Sheepdog.
A couple of Rotties, a Manchester Terrier, a Bouvier... too many breeds to name.

All in all, I think there were 25-30 dogs there.

There was a definite difference in the herding styles amongst the breeds.
The Shepherds tended to be quite vocal, and most settled into a nice gathering style of herding.
Some of the other breeds are more physical with the sheep; my mother's poodle was most interested in splitting a sheep off from the group and chasing that one around, and jostling shoulders.

You could clearly see the differences in temperment amongst the Shepherds.  Some dogs were timid and never really fully engaged the sheep.  Others showed a keen interest from the moment they stepped in the pen, and just needed to be shown exactly what to do.
A few good dogs acted as though they'd been herding their whole lives (though I can assure you, they hadn't).

Sorry to have missed Kerry. She is one of the AKC folks who has always been very supportive of the schutzhund clubs and German bloodlines.
