Now the show dog from the video from Byadder is the real deal!! That is a very nice working dog. I don't dissect pieces of the dog to look for weaknesses. I look at the mission of the dog and the way the dog handles that mission. Doesn't have to hit the hardest or have the hardest grips, but rather be effective at performing the mission for the handler. The way this dog handled duo bad guys was very good as he made snap judgements of engagement when necessary to keep both people in check. When one finally got to touching him he immediately lit him ip. Many many sport dogs would not be as "effective " in this situation as this dog. Some would...the point is that this dog showed aggression, flexibility, judgement, and ability to make decisive decisions time and time again in split second periods. This is what a working dog should be capable of  and the trait that makes for good police dogs. In closing, any line dog (except ASS), can be a good working dog, the problem with the showlines is that its ability to consistently "produce" this same type of dog litter after litter is usually not there.

I would have to agree. Showlines do not produce these types of dogs because showline breeders do not select these type of dogs to breed to. The dog in the video will more than likely never be bred by any showline kennels unless the dog enters the show ring and does well, and I do not think the dog will be in the show ring anytime soon.

if the showline breeders started selecting these type of dogs based on their working ability then soon they would have dogs that worked well. But in order to find these dogs they are going to have to look elsewhere than the show ring.

Heres some "great" dogs at the Sieger show in 2008......this is why working line folk say what they say about them.

Very nice dog!! Makes me think of my old female..exactly the kind of training I like..Real situation  (civil).  That's the way I like to train..not just for sport..but for real life.
I agree that probably this dog won't make it to the show ring and win..so it won't be bred.  I think breeders all want great dogs that performs and have titles in their pedigree..Working dog breeders are the same (except for female that sometime have no title) they all want a dog that has perform well in the field.  They don't want John Doe who is doing great at the club but is never entered in a trial.

Let's face it..to find good working dogs you have to go see trials..to see beautiful well structure dogs..you have to go to a dog show.  And these people don't match well as we can see on this board LOL..That doesn't help bringing back the two sides together..

Funny, I attend trials and enter them from time to time.  I also attend shows-- and enter them from time to time, albeit less often than trialing.   I have attended both SV-style shows and AKC /CKC shows, although I have entered only SV-style shows.   What's the effect?   Makes me even more settled in my preference.   Perhaps more knowledgeable than some who only do one or the other, or only one type of show.  It's rather like the difference between someone reared only on  Wendy's chili versus someone reared on Wendy's chili, as well as Texas chili, Cincinnati-style chili, Oklahoma style chili, and vegetarian chili.  The later perhaps has a better basis for forming an opinion and preference, than the former.

It is very clear that most of you here want everything in a dog, Show Dog, Sport Dog, Civil Dog(real life police dog) etc... This I can tell, it will not be popssible!!! Sport Dog are trained to bite hard yes hard but won't bite if they don't see sleeve, bite suit etc...  Once convert into civil dog, it will be too much liability on the field, dog does not knows or differ.

My freind, this is where I will disagree with you they can cross train and know the difference in my opinion.

by anvardean on 13 March 2009 - 20:03

You guys also need to know that the training for those top VA dog are solely purpose to have a title i.e. Schh1-3, no more no less, once it got the high rate in show, that dog would never need to do anything but stud or produce baby, For the real sport world , youo need constantly train your dog to perform as "perfect" as possible to acquire the high score. So you all need to have a clear distinctive aspect of what you asking for. The best VA(show) dog can perform the task but does not need to. Hope you see the point.
