YR,

Of course, we cannot possibly always know what each dog carries.  That is something that can just pop up with the "right" breeding partner and alignment of the stars.  I am talking about the odd colored pup on the ground and not disclosing to a perhaps unsuspecting individual that it is a disqualifying color.

I know when i first got into German lines, I had never seen or heard of a blue or liver gsd.  Some blues can't be easily distinquished from blacks, especially by John Q. Public.  To date, I have seen only two livers in person and one blue.  I must admit :  the blue was a beautiful dog.  He was owned by a street person and was the color of a Russian Blue cat and had blue eyes.   Would I want such a dog?  Not necessarily--temperament and working ability means more to me than looks.  BUT....all things being equal, if the puppy in a litter that I tested and examined was the one with everything I wanted and just happened to be blue or liver ,   I would have a very hard time making a decision.

An ethical breeder discloses everything to the buyer, especially faults which disqualify dogs from breeding and showing. Besides these kind of dilute colors, that should also go for puppy males with one or two undescended testicles! A "pet quality" puppy should be sold on limited AKC registration and be heavily discounted.

P.S. If you wonder where I got the above link from: It was talked about on the German workingline forum! Shame, shame!

Honesty means what the word implies.

Yup that one is a liver.

Not ethical not to disclose.  Blue and liver pups should be sold (or given away) as the faulty colors they are.  Not as "rare" and certainly not for high prices and without spay/neuter contracts.

Wow, full price and a high one at $2500 for a unshowable, unbreedable dog. And please don't tell me Krapwork doesn't know a liver or a blue from a normally pigmented dog. Red sable my ass, look at the nose! LOL Cute pup. I think if I ever prodeuced one, I might keep it if it was worth titling, just for fun. If not I'd have it "fixed" reg it as limited and then sell it for what I was into it, shots, spay, wormer and the like. I wouldn't let it go unaltered, even with limited reg, due to all the horror stories we all read here.

YR  Suffice it to say that off colors are in the gsd genome and will pop up now and again. They can be remarkablly persistent because they can pass down hidden for 5, 6 ,7 generations or more before the right combo of partners brings the genes back together again. I would not rush off and put much faith into lists compiled on the internet.  The one most people cite is the Sahela list and it has serious authentication problems. For a flavor read this thread and scroll down to Sherman Ranches first post.  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/184151.html.

I am a law librarian by trade and part of my job is teaching people how to evaluate web sites for reliable information. This site flunks on numerous counts just one of them being self interest. A partial quote from my post on the other thread -

"Re the veracity of the listings on the first site the OP listed one thing to look at is as Dr. Phil says - do they have a dog in the fight. Lo- guess what on the front page it specifically offers GSDs of ALL colors. If there is a vested interest as there is here, the very legitimate question becomes does the poster have something to gain by tarring with a very broad brush well known dogs in the breed.  The obvious answer until proven differently is yes.

Such compilation of known faults/problems especially health problems in a breed can be extremely useful but must always be used with extreme care and not as a means of wholesale exclusion without thought. However before any such list should be used for any purpose other than idle curiosity there has to be a verification and veracity system in place and it is best developed by someone who does not have a vested interest in a certain outcome."

Well, now that we are all on the same page....  ,    Can you BELIEVE that mess????  "   No wonder why now have crappy limiting legislation  being proposed  in this state and that kind of website does NOT help.
