My daughter is a godsend!
When I got to the shop after morning bus run, she had cleaned and steralized the area the pups were going to be in, had everything set up and ready to put them in, fed the baby squirrels and cleaned them up. I had dropped everything off at the shop at 5 am on my way to work. She helped me get food ready for the babies then while I was grooming the dogs she had bathed and ready she sat there and fed each pup with a bottle to make sure they got good nutrition before putting them on the mush. I dont know what I would do without her! I am going to have to give her a nice bonus in her check this week lol She is my Bather and allaround shop girl.
I called the vet about 9 am and Xena was extremely lethargic and he was concerned about that as was the poison control. He did another blood draw even tho it wasnt supposed to be for 24 hours. The levels were all in the normal range. They fed her and took her out to potty and she was real unsteady on her feet. I called again this evening about 4:30 and the tech told me that she ate and tolerated the food well and that the doc would be giving me a call, he was contemplating sending her home since everything was good but that he wanted to check with poison control first. He called me back about an hour later and said that poison control had advised that she remain on IVF another 24 hours, that sometimes after being removed from fluids they crash and apparently have a delayed reaction to the toxins and go into renal failure. She is going to stay another night and hopefully she can come home tomorrow.
I did want to mention, When I talked with poison control last night the first thing they said was DO NOT LET HER NEAR THE PUPPIES!!!
I had asked my vet and he didnt know so I asked them. They are not sure if the toxins pass thru the milk, so I have been on pins and needles about the pups, they have already lost so much weight from not eating yesterday and not getting as much as they should today, There is really no way to tell if they are affected because the symptoms could also mimic the sudden change in diet.
I am exhausted and I will surely sleep well tonight, but not as well as I will once Xena is home and safe. She wont be nursing the puppies, They had already started losing weight because she didnt seem to have as much milk.
Thanks folks, your support and advice has meant alot :)

Hope it goes OK for you and Xena! What an ordeal! I think it was YR that said to feed goat milk. It is an excellent choice. I use to use goat milk, plain yogurt and some baby rice cereal made into a thin gruel, then keep getting it a bit thicker to stick to the ribs as they learn to eat it! Once the pups have the art of eating down you can add soaked dog food to the mixture and slowly back off on the milk and rice cereal. I would continue using the yogurt. I always had the mom there though so I just had to do it once or twice a day at first. Hopefully Zena will be OK to still feed them some good old "dog milk" but helping her with this mixture sure would be a good idea!

IMO puppy food (soaked so it is soft) is just fine for 3 week olds - they don't need the milk anymore. Add some goat's milk to the smushed puppy food at first just to get them the "yummy factor" but they would get all the nutrition they need just from the puppy food (good quality puppy kibble). If they are losing weight and not eating the puppy food, then add stuff like goats' milk formula, karo syrup and/or nutrical for calories - or stick some canned food in there, it's all fat and easy to digest. They don't need to be bottle fed at all at 3 weeks old. At that age the mom's milk is starting to dry up and becomes a supplement-only food by 4 weeks.

Her levels are all good, I guess her next blood pull will let you know for sure. If she's passed all those raisins I'd see that as a good thing. :)
They may have you continue giving her SQ fluids once you have her home.
You will pull through don't worry! Remember that what doesn't kill you, makes you stonger. :)
I think too that a puppy mush should be OK for the pups too, they are definitely old enough for that.

I think I will try the canned food, They jump into the mush but after a few licks they turn away, same with the milk with rice cereal added. I might try the canned food, they might go after it bettter. I ran out of goats milk and am using the esibalac. I think thats what the problem is.

WOOHOOOOO!!! I opened a can of food, just to see the reaction, Put some in my hand and on my fingers and stuck it under their noses, and they liked to have ripped my fingers off! They ate the whole can between em. I did see that 4 were real food agressive, wouldnt move out of that dish for anything. 2 others would go lick a bit then go play, 1 wasnt interested in it unless it was on my fingers and the other just wasnt interested. It is also the thinnest so I pretty much pushed it on her so she would get some nutrition. I will stop at tractor supply tomorrow and see what kind of GOOD canned food they have, all I had on hand was pedigree. I will probably also pick up a can of pure pumpkin, I can see diarhea on its way lol
Thanks for th esuggestion, I think this just might be the turn around I needed. I will still give them the Nutrical ( I picked up 2 tubes from the vet today, he was closed when I got there but I had already talked with him and he left them in the mailbox for me lol) What suppliments should I add to the canned food if any? I think I might have a bottle of Petinic left, I need to check, it might be expired. It is some great stuff, pulled many a pup thru crisis. Good amounts of Iron and B12.
ok 1 more feeding of the squirrels and I might get to bed at normal time tonight :) 2 hours sleep when you are under stress is not a good thing lol

If you have your dogs microchipped with the HomeAgain chip, and have updated your service, If you ever need the poison control, it is free! I wish I would have known that! I paid 55 bucks for it and it could have been free lol

Shandra,
Glad to hear Xena's levels were good. All positive thoughts are going your way.
I'm sure you were very happy to see those babies eating. I hope you get some much-needed sleep.
Thank goodness for your daughter.
Will be waiting for your next posting.
