Doggie, the overwhelming odds are that your dog just had a bad day. A headache, a stomach ache, some sort of pain somewhere that caused her to shiver. It doesn't mean that she's epileptic or has a fatal condition of some sort.

by 1doggie2 on 18 May 2007 - 15:05

That is what I am hoping for. She is fine today. She started blowing her coat after this episode. The cost of the blood test will be worth it, if it puts my mind to rest. I have come to the conclusion, I have been very spoiled with all of the dogs I have had.

by 1doggie2 on 18 May 2007 - 23:05

I had the vets office fax over the blood work while I am waiting for the vet to call. She has Low Calcium and Low Lipase. Everything else was the middle of normal.

I am going to assume it is the change in her diet, from 1/2 RC and 1/2 solid gold. she has been on 1/2 solid gold and 1/2 Eagle Pack, I am going to change her to all Eagle pack. They have stated on the package 95% calcium and Solid gold just lists it at the bottom with no amounts stated.

I was also very gald to see her bun and creatinine levels and ratios, were down in the low normal range. They have droped since the change in the food.

Oskar1, I am going to assume you understand the low calcium levels, could you please explain this to me and the risks. Do I have the luxury of changing her food over a weeks time, and leaving her on the new food and rerun the blood to see the changes in a month. Or would I be putting her at risk and if so what is the risk. if there is anyone else out there with any thought on this?

while I am at it, what is lipase, what issues will this cause if low? Should I be concerned/overly?

Vet called, told me to get her on supplements now, no fooling around with the food, and a wait and see. Goahead and change her to all eagle pack, but needs extra calcium now.

Lipase, no big deal.

I'll be darned, Ulli hit that one spot on, didn't he? Glad to hear it's nothing worse; she should be just fine.

by 1doggie2 on 19 May 2007 - 03:05

Yes, he did. This board is so full of knowlege and help. I am excited that this is all it is. I went out and got her her Calcium/Vitiamin D capsules. He wanted her on the combo, apparently the D helps her abosorb the calcium. I am glad I did not wait to see if she had another episode, this lack of Calcium could have killed her, such a simple cure and under $20.00 (not counting the vet and blood work, only the cure) The vet explained it could stop her heart. How miserable would I have been knowing, I could have saved her for $20.00. So for all of you that gave advise and helped calm me, made me worry. THANKS..... WE DID GOOD

Well, well, well .....

Under 20 bucks, hmmm....... you just wait till my bill arrives ;-) !!  Glad your baby is doing fine again. Low calcium levels often show in bitches when about to get into heat, if not treated it can prevent that the bitch is able to recieve a mating. If they do take, the pups run the risk of beeing crippled, or die in uterus. I have a hard time to explaine this in detail, because of my limited english, please forgive me.  This can be easily controled and treated, i would talk to my Vet and get liquid Calcium and if you detect a tremor just give the dog 1 ml oral, it will stop within minutes.

Thanks Blitzen, if i would be a girl, i would blush !!

You all have a great Weekend, Ulli Dresbach

Hey Blitzen,

yuuup, you got that right...... but in the meantime, i enjoy beeing on the sunny side !! No, main thing for me is that 1doggie2 has a peace of mind and now his girl is ok, thats more important to me than anything else. Ulli Dresbach

I wish I'd have had some GSD people to talk to when my first GSD was dying from leukemia. His breeder wasn't interested. It does help to talk to other dog owners when there are problems.
