This breaks my heart. Whatever you do pleae be careful, this dog could be representing the breed as a whole if he hits the papers for biting. You know, Isn't being convicted of animal abuse public record. Someone with knowledge should make a website and list them, so the breeders could check and not sell a pup to them.

ok here goes, The dog was in a town in another county, there are no other animal shelters so he came here. the folks who brought him here work for the mother of the guy that thumped on the dog, he would come and live with mom periodically. No one saw him beat the dog neighbors or employees, but the mom told the employees he had beat on the dog, so therefore without Mom to testify there is no way to prosecute the jerk. the folks who work for the mom brought the dog to us and told us what they knew from first hand knowledge of being around the dog and told us what the mother had told them about the sons interactions with the dog. I don't know anything concrete yet about the dog, We will know more after today's evaluations, like I said before I don't know if he would be good for sport, But I think his only chance is to be with someone very experienced handleing this type of hard dog, yes I describe him as hard, he shows no fear, he meets you more than 1/2 way, and he does not jump back but waits for you to make that mistake so far no one here has been allowed to do that and so far no mistakes have been made, this dog is handled in very controlled situations and is not being/ or going to be put into a situation where he could hurt someone. Ethically is the dillema here guys which is why I came to this board. I feel for this dog but know NOT EVERY DOG IS SUITABLE FOR ADOPTION, WE CAN NOT SAVE THEM ALL !! I know this. However that being said, would I be doing my job if I did not do all that I can to attempt to find out more about him, ie.. the evaluation today. Before I made any decisions in haste. I don't think I would be doing my job. Again a big thanks to all who have posted. I'll let you know what the evaluation brings.

To take a dog that you consider eligible to be put down and introduce it to sport is at the very least unethical. He is a representative of the breed and if he does damage no one will ask if he was abused at one time or another. Just because a dog growls when he is beat doesn't make him hard. You are again proving yourself to be irresponsible. Why would you ask for the boards opinion and then blow everyone off? It is because they did not tell you what you wanted to hear.

A dog that growls or even lunges back at someone who is hurting him is not a bad dog. I need some clarity. Are you all afraid and cautious of him because of what has been said by others (the idiots), or because of what you have observed yourself? And the comments, "He shows no fear" (nothing wrong with that), and "He meets you 1/2 way" (wouldn't expect anything more) just don't frighten me. NOW--What does he do next? Does he growl, snarl, or just look like he will lunge? WHAT? Be careful Echo. Make sure the evaluator isn't someone who will play it "too" safe for fear of putting their rep on the line, and not give the dog a fair shake. Careful representation of the breed is all well and good, but this is no hypothetical we're discussing here---He deserves his chance at life. I know you'll do your best.

Spook Stay out of this conversation, Your assessments of this are your own and your way of trying to get at me, I am telling you now, Leave this conversation YOU ARE NOT WELCOME TO INPUT IN THIS AT ALL !!! LMH Thank You and I appreciate you reading what was written without putting a twist on it. You read it correctly and your right, I'll do the very best I can. Once again..... for all of those who can not read namely spook, I NEVER said this dog should go for sport, or be introduced to sport. What I said was that it would take someone who is very familiar with dogs and knows how to read them properly !!! What better person than a sport person ?? I was simply suggesting that someone who is familiar in training sport dogs would be a more appropriate placement for this dog "IF" BIG IF he is deemed appropriate for placement at all. Spook hope you caught that this time, if NOT I don't care, DO NOT ENTER THIS CONVERSATION AGAIN !!!!!

by spook101 on 26 April 2007 - 19:04

All anyone needs to do is read your posts. I stand by my words. You didn't hear what you wanted to so you attack. By the way this is still a public board.

by canine_karla on 26 April 2007 - 19:04

I'm confused. Why would Spook101 be excluded from this topic. He obviously made very valid points? So WHY???

Echo, I think in this case Spook made valid points. I feel sorry for the dog. However, if the stories you have heard are true I also think he more then likely will be a liablility to a future owner and the GSD breed as a whole. Sometimes the kindest thing a person can do is give the dog peace.

by EchoMeadows on 26 April 2007 - 21:04

valid points about the dog yes, and that I never argued with on his first post. Then he comes on with and I quote "You are again proving yourself to be irresponsible. Why would you ask for the boards opinion and then blow everyone off? It is because they did not tell you what you wanted to hear." That would be why, This dog is more important to me than Spooks little tiff with me and I don't care to deal with his bullshit while I'm trying to help a freaking dog !!! I'm listening to everyones points, quite frankly have been leaning toward PTS if you did not bother to read the first post. But I'm willing to spend more time and more energy to make sure I'm doing what is right by everyone, dog, potential adopter, all the way around. I guess shame on me spook but for all I care you can go die. Leave this subject if you care at all about this dog if you stay in it, you only show your own selfishness !!! This subject is not about YOU and it's not about ME !!! It's about SAM

by platz on 26 April 2007 - 22:04

Oh for god's sake echo, cut it out. You sound like an idiot. Your not helping the pup by acting like this. Didn't you think you'd get replies like this? You've been around these boards long enough. You knew you'd get positive and negative replies. So don't go off when you here something you don't won't too. Give the boy some time to settle in. E-val him, give him differant situations, see how he reacts. The best thing for him might be to put him to sleep, there's nothing good for him going through life scared. But he needs time first to understand that his circumstances have changed, see how he reacts to them. Donna
