The person (s) who wrote Isaiah didn't view the Earth from space.

Regardless of whether or not these interpretations, which are fringe interpretations, are the proper ones, you still have a major problem: they are not science.

But let's play flat Earth Bible verses:

First off the whole verse from Isaiah 40:22
He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

A tent over a sphere?

Job 38:13
13 That it might take hold of the ENDS OF THE EARTH, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

Jeremiah 16:19
19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ENDS OF THE EARTH, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.

Daniel 4:11
11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH

Matthew 4:8
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

Psalm 104:5
He established the earth upon its foundations, So that it will not totter forever and ever.

I Chronicles 16:30: "He has fixed the earth firm, immovable."
Psalm 93:1: "Thou hast fixed the earth immovable and firm..."

Surely the Earth is not "a circle because it is round", as Earth (scientifically speaking) is actually an elipse rather than an exact sphere?

@noitsyou : No reason you can't put a tent over a sphere. My soccer ball fits fine in my two-person tent !  So its only dependant on how big a tent you use.

More interesting to contemplate is the idea that it would be floating, 'cos there is always that ol' question about just where the waters of the firmament began and ended ...

Shtal, don't be a smart ass repeating my comments....got it??

You can put a tent over a sphere but only half the people will be "under" it.

That's ok, noitsyou, I expect Shtal would be quite happy for those 'down under' to drown or be invisible, so VK4 can't spoil his idea of what the Earth is like.Wink Smile  (Hansi also, probably.)

Noitsyou wrote: According to the Bible, the Earth is not round. I think that pretty much ends any debate on the Bible as a scientific document.

Perhaps I will extrapolate same verse: Job 26:10. I will repost: This verse teaches that God has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters at the boundary of light and darkness. This boundary between light and darkness (day and night) is called the “terminator” since the light stops or “terminates” there. Someone standing on the terminator would be experiencing either a sunrise or a sunset; they are going from day to night or from night to day. The terminator is always a circle, because the earth is round.

One of the great delights of observing the moon through a small telescope is to look at its terminator, especially during the first or third quarter phases when the terminator is directly down the middle of the moon. The craters are most easily seen at this boundary since the sun is at a low angle and casts very long shadows there. The moon looks particularly three-dimensional when viewed through a telescope during these phases; it is clear that the moon is a sphere—not a flat disk.

For the earth, the terminator occurs not on a cratered rocky surface, but primarily on water (since the earth’s surface is 70 percent water). Job 26:10 suggests a “God’s eye” view of the earth. This biblical passage would be nonsense if the earth were flat, since there would be no true terminator; there is no line to “step over” that separates the day from night on a flat surface. Either it is day everywhere or night everywhere on a hypothetical “flat earth.” However, the earth does indeed have a boundary between light and darkness which is always a circle since the earth is round.

@Shtal,

A. You haven't explained the inconsistencies in the Bible, as shown by my post of Bible verses.

B. You haven't explained how what you posted in science.

And if you are going to quote Job 26:10 why not quote 9 and 11? I'll do it, "9"He obscures the face of the full moon And spreads His cloud over it. 10"He has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters At the boundary of light and darkness. 11"The pillars of heaven tremble And are amazed at His rebuke.…"

So the phases of the moon are explained by God using a cloud and the heavens have pillars that can tremble.

I will show you scriptural references such as Revelation 7:1 are cited, which speaks of “four angels standing at the four corners of the earth.” However, this passage makes reference to the cardinal directions as seen on a compass – i.e. north, south, east and west. Terminology to a similar effect is used today when we speak of the sun rising and setting each day, even though we know that it is, in fact, the earth which orbits around the sun.

Another passage often referred to is Psalm 75:3, which speaks of God holding the pillars firm. However, the psalms are written in the poetry genre. Rather than referring to literal pillars, this is representative of God’s guaranteeing the earth’s stability. Even when the moral order of the world seems to have crumbled, God will not fully withdraw His sustaining power.

In contrast to the supposed “flat earth” verses, there are numerous Scriptures that clearly indicate otherwise. We talked about already earth is described in Job 26:7 as being suspended over empty space, implying a spherical figure. We also touched already in Isaiah 40:21-22, which refers to “the circle of the earth.” This is further supported by Proverbs 8:27 (NKJV), which speaks of God drawing a circle on the face of the deep. From a “bird’s-eye view” of the ocean, the horizon is seen as a circle. Such an observation indicates that where light terminates, darkness begins, describing the reality of day and night on a spherical earth.

The round-earth idea is further supported by Jesus in Luke 17:31,34: “In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back...I tell you, in that night there will be two people in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left.” This would seem to indicate the phenomenon of day on one side of the globe while darkness abides on the other.

In conclusion, the curvature of the earth is certainly a biblical concept, and there is little or no basis for the charge that the Bible teaches a flat earth. The Scriptures that seem to present a flat earth can all easily be explained when correctly interpreted and understood.

The Earth isn't suspended over empty space so there goes your "science."

What I don't understand, and I doubt those of whom I speak are even capable of explaining it, is why faith is not enough for the faithful. Why do you have to prove, scientifically, that God exists? God has never proven himself to us and neither has Jesus. Moses claims he spoke to God so we have to take Moses' word for it. You have the supposed miracles during Exodus but who actually saw them? Again, all we have is faith that whoever wrote all of that down was telling the truth and that it hasn't undergone changes between when it was first written and today.

The same with Jesus. He never proved he was the son of God to us, or anyone. The miracles he performed, even if true, do not make him the son of God. That's a connection those who witnessed them made. He could have been Satan or a magician or a con man or an alien. And who saw these miracles anyway? A few people whose word we have to accept as true. All of this, on faith. If you need more than that in order to believe or if you need to come up with "scientific" arguments in order to convince others then you missed the point. Faith is in the heart, not in the head. The most important aspects of Jesus, as far as Christians are concerned, are not his miracles but his words. In the beginning was the word...If that isn't enough then you're no better than those who mocked Christ while he was on the cross for not coming down if he is the son of God.

I was already been told through PM that you are piece of sh*t..

But regarding the earth floats in space:

Job 26:7 which states that God “hangs the earth on nothing.” This might evoke an image of God hanging the earth like a Christmas tree ornament, but hanging it on empty space. This verse expresses (in a poetic way) the fact that the earth is unsupported by any other object—something quite unnatural for the ancient writers to imagine. Indeed, the earth does float in space. We now have pictures of the earth taken from space that show it floating in the cosmic void. The earth literally hangs on nothing, just as the Bible teaches.
