An aspect of US culture I don't get is what appears to be a contradiction between the way military service is spoken so highly of and the way on average so many vets actually get treated by the same people.

WWII vets sure are respected in rhetoric and action but thousands of other vets get "thank you for your service" while they languish homeless and broken and sick in the gutter.

I have even heard right wing view the entire military as a form of welfare sucking off tax dollars.

Maybe only an outsider can see it.

And what's the link between hardcore Christians and love of war. Some Aussie Christians here not long got out of prison for attacking US jet fighters making then inoperable at a US base.

They exposed some big security gaps but gladly went to prison ranting about swords to plough shares or something, crazy yes, illegal yes but consistent with their gods words also yes.

I never see anyone dissing the military or vets. Quite the contrary, well, since Vietnam. I think maybe you believe the media too much, as an outsider.

The odd reality about a portion of the homeless community is that they prefer the lifestyle. There is freedom to pursue certain vices that the lifestyle provides and their material needs are minimal. Not everyone wants the price of the cure.

Fundamentalist Christians can be as loony as Fundamentalist Mormons, as Fundamentalist Muslims, as Fundamentalist Liberal Avant Guards, or Fundamentalist any thing.

That is a really callous post.

by beetree on 26 March 2016 - 21:03

Oh, I am sorry you feel that way. I thought it was a no frills, honest post.

And frankly for you to be the judge of callous is well, absurd, because I have heard so much worse from you on other topics towards other players. I sort of think of you— that if you can dish it then you should be able to take it.

by vk4gsd on 26 March 2016 - 21:03

Its not callous at me, it is a heartless, smug assessment of a lot of vets tho.

I hope you one day see how soulless you have become with that post.

Pete, you believe some bs propaganda fed to you. 'WW 2 vets languish homeless, broken and sick in the gutter'...you're drinking some rank koolaide. WW2 vets, those that are still alive, are in their 90's by now. My own father died thirty years ago in a va hospital. You should get facts instead of puking up bs you are spoon fed.

by vk4gsd on 26 March 2016 - 21:03

Do you want to read and quote my actual post then apologise for your dishonest edit, clearly I stated WWII vets are NOT in the group I was referring to, unedited;

"WWII vets sure are respected in rhetoric and action but thousands of other vets get....."

LOL@ worrying about my soul. I didn't think you cared for such nonsense.

I did a photo journalist stint in HS and our subjects were the homeless. We took their pictures and talked with them. It was an eye opener. The truth is some people don't want to be helped. Sorry, if this has some personal meaning to you. What is more true is that if people seek help, they can usually find it. At least a bed and meal. And in that instance, I am part of a philanthropy that provides for such, and much, much more.

'WWII vets sure are respected in rhetoric and action but thousands of other vets get "thank you for your service" while they languish homeless and broken and sick in the gutter.'-vk

Appologise, as I must have misunderstood your meaning...sort of convoluted sentence.

Vietnam vets were used and abused and were the last of the drafted military.
Now that the military depends on volunteer only, the military needs to be a lot nicer and make benefits more attractive than when there was a mandatory register for the draft.
By now, the Vietnam vets are old and now taken better care of than before the current 'war'.

Go behind yr high school playing journo stint and get some real data.

If its a non issue to you and you think some unknown portion of vets are sick, committing suicide, unemployed, homeless....because they just wanna have a good time you are nuts.
