GSD in that example yes. But all their responses aren't that way. What about the confident dog who protects on his own. What's his stimuli to protect? Or the Czar/Blitz example. What's the stimuli?

there is always a payoff for any behavior, no matter how selfless or altruistic it may appear. It may simply be the good feeling we get from being able to help someone in need. We know dogs are capable of emotions, love, mourning a loss, why would they not also be capable of what appears a selfless act like protecting or aiding a friend? But they are getting something out of it.
