You're right, Pookie! A helper can make the protection easy or on the contrary harder for a dog. The scores appeared on the BSZS some years ago. There were only a few marks before: Ausgepragt, Vorhanden and Nicht genügend with läßt ab or läßt nicht ab. I would say the scores make the show more interesting for the spectators. They may agree with the score and applause or may disagree whistling. Nevertheless the score tells a lot about the dog, about the helper and about the judge! And everybody can judge the dog, the helper and the judge for himself!

A dog looking back at its handler suggests lack of full "confidence" in himself and what he's trained to do, as if he's looking for help or reassurance. It is a bad sign and most probably takes from scores. Because he should only focus on helper and watch him closely.
Helper role is vital, but I assume a helper is on the side of the individual dog and would do his best to present the dog at its best. If I remember correctly I was told here on PDB a helper is assigned by owner of dog not by the show authorities, hope I am right.

Ibrahim, the helpers are chosen by SV, but it´s not in their interest to make a dog run away.
The handlers do have the possibility to train with the helpers two or three times officially a couple of weeks before the Show.
The helpers rotate on the show, so a handler can´t know for sure which helper will work his dog.

A dog looking back at his handler can also suggest a dog who is lacking the complete picture in training and a solid foundation. Many of these dogs originally obtained titles very quickly without good foundation (I know dogs who are sent to Germany at age 18-24 months with zero prior training and come home SchH3 in 6-8 months or even less). So when it comes time to prep for a Sieger show, getting a reliable "out" becomes very important so the dogs are seeing a lot of pressure to perform that behavior. Again the focus is on this one-time performance and one behavior. If a good training foundation is not there (coupled with dogs that are already a bit soft for bitework), you can easily get a dog that feels pressure from the handler during the "out" and is looking around for the handler, moreso as the handler walks in. I don't think it means that the dog is looking for reassurance from the handler. Most of the time, I think means the dog is actually more nervous about the handler than the helper!

Spoke to a friend who attended the Sieger, she said that Pacco was outstanding in his bite work and is a very beautiful dog. She also said that were some very excellent young up and coming dogs in the 18 month class. Also toplines are improving and not so many sickle hocks or overdone heads. Females were generally very good to excellent and lots of applause coming from their protection rings - she didn't watch it. Helpers did a wonderful job.

Krue76
Thank you!
TSB-Überprüfung Rüden and TSB-Überprüfung Hundinen were at the same time. It was impossible to take videos of females when taking videos if males. We have videos only our two females but we had to miss some males at that moment. Sorry!
