My younger pup did this too, but after putting a couple of tablespoons of live yoghurt into their dry food this has stopped. I figure eating poop is the dogs natural way of replenishing its gut flora. Some dogs lose gut flora more than others(same with humans) and so natures way is for dogs to recycle and get this from their poop(thankfully not the same with humans!). Anyone interested in a long winded discussion about the relevance of gut flora on general health, then I would be happy to oblige!
Coyotes will eating deer feces to survive in winter, & I've had the unpleasant experience of finding patients with that sh*t eating grin, literally...that's the nastiest thing you'd ever want to see! My puppy did it a couple of times, but we added yoghurt to the diet & seemed to stop it, along with our very consistant disapproval.jo
I know this is a serious question, but I'm sitting at my desk laughing my ass off at the thought of a turd burglar. Thanks for the laughs!!!
When my dog started doing this I contacted her breeder who told me that I might be overstressing her with too much training and travel for a pup. I backed off on the stress level and the problem disappeared. I was absolutely amazed.
kalibeck, antelope and deer and rabbit poo is a doggie delicacy out here! as well as kitty poo. my 14 week old pup was eating his. i simply told him NO and he quit. hope he forgets about it. but then, he has discovered horse poo in the corrals! and man o man.....he is in 7th heaven!! (he is fed very well, too)
Marci, you,ve got one good answer from a experience breeder
other than the cat crap, I have to wonder if this is somewhat demographic ???
We don't see/hear it happening here so I have to wonder is it something lacking in the soil ?? ie minerals ?
And would not even really give this much consideratiion, exept that I rarely hear this discussion in our area here.
So where is everyone from that has had this expeirience with dogs eating poo ?
We are are on West Coast (Oregon) and don't see/hear of it but on very rare occations, with the exception of the Cat Poo, I think EVERY dog will eat that nasty stuff.
And will appologize for somewhat deviating from the original ?, However this may actually generate a positive discovery, and potential solutions.
I give a 1/4 lb block of limburgur cheese, once a week for 5-6 weeks and seems to work for me.
Stephen
Now, that was funny, funk man. You're kidding, but I'm not really sure if SGBH is being facetious.
Stephen--does the cheese really work?
PSPoppa--Interesting the stress analogy touched on by your breeder. (I felt the B-Complex vitamin was the answer, and we all know what the bottle labels promote--Stress Formula.)
so how exactly did you figure out that he liked his poop frozen?
