I'm curious, too. If these are hereditary health problems that you speak of, Brindle, are they in general in the Beauceron or is it something particular to the harlequin?

Well she has a common one for a large breed dog ...... hip dysplasia. Though to see her run and work you'd never have guessed it. She'll be 8 years old in 2 months and shows no signs despite it being obvious on x-rays.
Her 2nd health issue is one known in GSD's ( though it's in more and more breeds now ) .. EPI ( Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency ). So enzymes with every meal and she's doing ok. Has had this for a little over 2 years now.
Her 3rd health issue is IMT ( Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia ) . Like it sounds, it's an immune disorder. Her own body attacks her own platelets and destroys them. You need platelets to clot otherwise you can bleed to death.
She was treated with a very strong immunosuppressant which appears to have put her into remission of this disorder. We do bloodwork regulary to monitor things. Her platelets remain low but not in the danger zone. We've weaned her off the medications and she remains stable.
I'm on a lot of Beauceron forums as I really do love this breed. It seems that hip and elbow dysplasia is on the rise. Various immune issues seem to be popping up too. I wouldn;t say they are 'common' but there are enough discussions about dogs with immune disorders throughout the world that I am concerned.
There are also reports of Beaucerons with cardiomyopathy , again , is this just a few dogs that are being talked about ?
As we know, talk to enough people of any breed then some health issue will come up. Does that mean it's a "breed" issue ?
So far, it seems I have the only Beauceron with EPI ( aren't I lucky ?
) , though obviously I don't know all the dogs out there.
Beaucerons on the whole are a healthy breed. There does not seem to be an association with color and health.
Just like any other breed, if you want one, do lots of research into lines and breeders, to put the odds in your favor of finding a healthy line with the traits you want for your activity.
