Always best if the owner chooses as LaylaM is there and we all must live with our choices .. LaylaM .. I hope Missy continues her recovery .. please keep everyone informed how she does if you have time.  Also my apologies in that I noticed I had been misspelling ivermectin as invermectin ,, The correct name for the ingredient in Heartguard is Ivermectin not Invermectin.

Also a link to Dr. Jean Dodds website dealing with heartworm preventatives and intolerances

Occasionally, animals that have been taking monthly preventives for a relatively long time will develop subsequent product intolerance. This usually indicates that some underlying disease process has emerged to explain the problem. Based on cumulative data, it is my recommendation that dogs affected with autoimmune diseases and their immediate relatives receive only plain daily heartworm preventive (Dimmitrol = diethylcarmbazine). If heartworm disease is not prevalent where the animals live, routine use of heartworm preventives is not recommended. This is especially important for dogs suffering from chronic diseases of the skin, hair and coat, or those with bone marrow, thyroid or liver disease.

Hello, Missy is still doing better and able to close her mouth about 90% and eating dry food better she got her 1st lyme shot in April then a few weeks later got her 2nd booster. She is still on the doxy and weaning off steroids. We are going to give her the Heartguard this month but I just gave her a flea bath with shampoo instead of giving the K9 Advantix. Heres hoping she is ok. I appreciate all of your concerns!

Layla,
I think the Doxy is doing its stuff. I am still curious, now, about a few things. When did you start the doxy? Was your move from GA, (I think you said) to NY, recent? Was it stressful for your dog, do you think? Also, are you doing a flea bath because of a flea infestation that you see?

I am very glad she is doing well. A picture of Missy would make a nice update.

To answer you questions beetree, we moved to NY from GA in January. I only started the flea treatment in May as I figured the fleas and mosquitoes were starting here. So her first K9 Advantix was giving on May 4th. And her 1st dosage of Heartguard was in April. She was on Trifexis up until her last month in March. Her Rabies, Lyme and DHLPP were given April 10th. She started her Doxy around May 30th. She's 100% now and doing great!! LOL I think I got all the dates covered. So she is due for her next Heartguard pill very soon, figures crossed it was not the cause of the issue, but I don't think it was.

Layla,

Thanks for your reply. Your time table mirrors my experience with Doxy use and paralysis symptoms disappearing. I think the Heartgard will be okay. I just would not be using flea products unless I actually had a flea problem, (which I don't). Vets always "recommend" I do, and I decline. If I saw some, I wouldn't hesitate but I like to keep the "poison" use as minimal as possible.

I suspect your dog was infected before your move and the "stress" of moving could have been the trigger to go from a symptom free state, to what you experienced.

I am very happy for your outcome.

Thumbs Up
