Hey Andrea, I moved from Germany 4 years ago and I know Stephanie personally since the late 80's. She has a small breeding program and really cares about her dogs. She bred some nice dogs so far although she has only bred a few litters. She only breeds with self trained and raised females and is very passionate about her breeding program. I think you are in good hands with her. Importing a puppy does not cost you much more than buying a puppy here in the US and have it shipped within the US. The puppies are cheaper in Europe than they are here. I also would not worry about the long flight. A normal puppy will be fine, maybe a little tired. I imported quite a few puppies from Germany so far and they were ALL alright, no problem at all. You are actually kind of a hero for the dog getting him/her out of the stupid crate. If you talk to Stephanie again tell her I say HI. My name now is Claudia Romard, but I think she only knows me under my maiden name Claudia Hofmann. I hope you will get a wonderful puppy. Claudia

Thanks Claudia, Thats what I was looking to hear! I am glad that you know her personally and I will tell her you said hi, I keep in contact with her every other day or so. I THANK EVERYBODY FOR ALL YOUR THOUGHTS!! I REALLY APPRECIATE IT! I have learned ALOT in just one day! All of you put time and effort into your thoughts, and thank you are for helping me out and warning me about the dangerous of puppy buying. Really sorry saspgmer about the whole buying process :-(. I hope I am making a good decision here as know I will have this dog for hopefully 10+years. I mean this is a tought decision, so many puppies & kennels, only one of me! P.s. You can still keep posting responces, I am more than happy to read them!

GSDandrea, there is another thing to consideration other than the initial cost of the puppy. It's mu understanding that most breeders in Germany offer no guarantees on their dogs so if you get a puppy that, for example, doesn't have good hips and/or elbows, then you are out every cent you have spent. I think many here in the US offer replacements for such puppies, but here again, it's buyer beware and you must really do your homework and read the contract from start to finish. I know some breeders here who place ridiculous strings on getting a replacement puppy, anything from saying you did not feed the dog right to saying the dog must first be returned and then they will have to put it down. Most I know would keep a puppy before they would agree to anything like that. At any rate, it sounds like you are heading in the right direction. Good luck!!

Ugh, please excuse all the typos above.....bad day.

Ok thanks Blitzen. I will get into more detail with the breeder about the guarantee. A couple weeks ago I was going to look at a 4mon old pup, locally (FL) and the breeder said she had the parent hips OFA'd (supposedly), after spending a half hour with the pup, I went inside to talk it over with the breeder. I asked about the OFA results and she played like I was stupid "the puppy dident have his hips done yet" blah blah blah..Like i dident know that already! She never did tell me the "parents results" she kept changing the subject, so I walked away..She was also pulling one of those "well 4 more people are coming to look at him and I havent anwsered 2 emails that are interested"..long story short thats how i made my decision to get a pup in Germany. The first thing I ask or look at is the parents hips/elbows results. I want a good working dog, but the health comes first!!!
