Many buyers of these designer dogs really do think they are getting something unique and special. It's all about marketing. In this area the latest "new breed" is a Jug (Jack Russell x Pug). Nasty looking little beasts with the IQ of a pet rock.
BTW, gsdlvr2, making that GSD x Chihuahua cross would probably require an AI LOL. That reminded me of how many pet owners would bring their new puppy to the vet's office and proudly announce somehitng like - this is a teacup poodle, St. Bernard cross........The mother was the poodle!!!!! Knowing the determination of a male dog when it comes to a bitch in standing heat, I think the will would be there, but I'd have to see the tie LOL.
