The French Ambassador recently asked the Chinese Prime Minister "what was the effect of the French Revolution on the development of democracy in Europe"?  The Chinese Prime Minister said that in his opinion it was too soon to tell !!  Wait one month and all questions of coat color may become more evident.

Budvar is a sable from what I can tell. Don't know where a black dog came from but if you say there is black in 5 generation it is possible just very slim. Like less than a 5% chance if my punnet squares I did are correct. Could be a very dark sable though, or a bi-color that doesn't show any other color yet. Let us know how the puppies are in the future! Especially interested in seeing what the mystery pup turns out to be! Let us know!!

OK.. Sorry that took so long.... had to downsize the photos before I could upload them... the puppy in question is the first one (yellow collar) .. the one I initially thought was pure black... but now I think I see a very slight spot of color on cheek.

This one is definately a sable.... (black collar)

This one is a sable (red collar) ... I like this one.. he he

Will this one be a bi-color?  (orange collar).  He is very black on the body.. but I can see cheek markings on both sides clearly and paws are colored as well.

The first one is a bi-color! Very dark, but also very young.. That small amount still counts! I also notice some on the side of the front arm. Bottom pup is a bi color as well.

I have had blues pop up from 7 generations back so yes it is certainly possible for 5 generations to thyrow blacks at you. IMO.

The mother is a sable with the black-tan recessive. The father is a sable with, probably, a black recessive.

I am inclined to agree with Blackthorn as it's the only combination that really makes sense.  I don't think the dark pups will be true bi-colors.

I have seen more than one supposed 'all black' at 12 weeks
turn into an 'only-just'  bi-colour by 6 months.  The markings
are faint, mottled and brown (rather than red tan), but they
are definitely no longer Black;  the colours confine themselves to
the lower legs.  Some pencilled areas on toes in one, others
too dark to even see that, let alone 'tar heels'.  In each case
there were NO, or next to no, markings on the head / face,
which remained black.  Bellies seem to stay dark too.
These were out of separate sources and I cannot tell you a thing
about their breeding, spaced out over about 3 years.  I had
assumed they were a result of dark sable to sable matings
(something I don't have experience with because sable x sable had
traditionally been seen as a Bad Thing in the UK, until recently among
working / sports folk).  Can't even say with any confidence that these
were BYB breedings although I suspect they may each have been.

Here is an example like you describe, Hundmutter.  Cassie is first depicted on the left, as a 7 week pup with clearly no other color than black on her, in this or several other 5mp pictures taken at the time from various angles.  Then the pics taken at 11 months old on the right show tan markings on all four legs and between the toes.  Cassie's pedigree is the same as this female, one of several solid black offspring out of two sable parents http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/dog.html?id=1861716
