I don't microwave coconut oil because it's likely that microwaving will kill off some of the good nutrients.  I just put it in their food solid and they go for it before anything else in the bowl.  Mine love it and their coats are just magnificent.

I agree with Judy.  Years ago I talked to a cancer doctor, he told me to throw out my microwave, and I did. :)

I dont have a microwave either....miss it sometimes but overall you get used to not having one. Ive been using coconut oil for some time now. I will mention that it doesn't work for all dogs. My golden's coat didnt improve much on it. And some of the claims of its benefits like weight loss is kinda far fetched. I like it to cook with because its one of the only oils that don't make me sick after eating it. Grapeseed oil is the other oil that I use to cook with.

The difference of how it tastes is whether its refined (no flavor) or unrefined. It's a great Omega 6 but since it does not contain Omega 3, you should suppliment if your food doesnt contain that. Trader Joes now carries it 16oz for $5.99. Thats the cheapest Ive seen for a small amount. Don't fall for the hype and spend extra for oils like Troical because virgin unrefined oil is virgin unrefined oil. The Trader Joes is organic so I'm not going to spend more than I have to because of a label. And more is not better. Find the minimum amount that works and use that. It is still a fatty oil that cause dogs to gain weight. My foster who is 170lbs gets a tablespoon a day that works for him. If you feed raw you may not see any improvement but adding the Omega 6 to the diet is a great way to get optimal health so thats why I give it.

My mother swears that it has helped my dad's alzheimers dramatically.

Michael
My dogs get about a teaspoon in the morning and again in the evening, straight off the spoon, after their meal, every day. I like to think of it as being similar to us having a 'sorbet' after a meal course to cleanse our palate LOL. They adore it. and really consider it their 'treat'.
Bhaugh, mine are raw fed, but I still notice the difference, especially in the thickness of the coat, and the reduced shedding.

For everyone who is thinking of trying it, once you have done for about a month, can you let us know what difference you notice if any.

I've been using it for two weeks now.  Haven't noticed a difference yet but I'll watch.  The thing is, my dogs already had nice coats and skin, and they are also getting 3-5 fish oil gel tabs a day and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.  I'm hoping that the overall effect will be good coats and skin.  My GSD's coat looks really nice right now but that is from a conditioner I tried when I bathed him this week.

Thanks Abby, I appreciate it.

Just bought my 2nd jar, have been using it for about a month.
Taz has a little less dandruff, a bit more - and slightly softer &
sweeter-smelling - coat than he did when I started using it.
I don't think the difference is huge, but am prepared to try it for
a while longer and see what happens.

Well, today I bought a 16 oz jar of Barlean's Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, for $15.95. The label says it tastes great and is cold pressed. Island fresh and organic. Beau gobbled it up right off the spoon. Mojo is a bit more delicate about it, but liked it too, just had to keep the Baby Rhino beast away to give him a chance to have his licks. Neither dog minded the consistancy right from the jar. I tasted it, and it had a nice subtle taste, too.

So, we shall see .... and I'll let you know how the dogs fare with it. So far... so good!

My dogs just started coconut oil a week ago and they love eat.  They eat it right off the spoon.   I also rub it into their coats if they are itchy.   My cats also like it!
