What exactly does Chlorophyll do? Block the scent? Stop the hormones? Thanks!

All it does is change the scent. I would rather put up with the noise then mess with additives and supplements to try and change things, you never really know about supplements. We have three girls that come in season in a row, we are on our second in season right now. Lots of whining but all in strong crates. One stays in the house while the other gets yard time.

Anyone thinking another unwanted litter on the way? Take the male elsewhere and be sure you do not have puppies.

blueskye It is suppose to help surpress odors from what I read. I don't know if it works, just what I read a long time ago and pulled out of the archives of my mind. It sounds like GS Mom has used it with success, so need more input from her.... it would be great if it did or at least toned things down, but I do not know for sure. I would guess be prepared for it not working, the females scent is pretty strong. If you try it or if anyone has had good experience beside GS Mom it would be nice to hear about it.

I put the female breeding animal in a safe boarding kennel. No problems, no grief, no puppies. No stress for the male either. Why is this so difficult?

The chlorophyll tablets allegedly work by altering the scent of the the bodily secretions, which would include the vaginal discharge of the bitch. Parsley is chewed by some people for the same purpose, and it's true that chlorophyll *will* counteract certain pheromones to some degree...but it's not a sufficient plan to keep an unwanted mating from happening! The tablets do NOT have any effect on the hormones of either the bitch or the male who's picking up her scent, however. FWIW, my experience with chlorophyll tablets was not satisfactory; I don't think it made a whit of difference in the bitch's scent, and the resident males continued their usual carrying on until the heat cycle had passed.

People take chlorophyll liquid and gel tabs (filled with the liquid) to help eliminate body odor and bad breath. It helps to mask the odor. It is a natural product - chlorophyll is produced by plants. I give either 2 liquid tabs twice a day or 1 tbsp liquid in the food twice a day. I have a relatively small house and 2 intact males - the older male has bred females before (he also broke his upper canines when he tried to break out of his crate at the club when one of the club members with a bitch in standing heat parked next to my car and was fussing with her dog outside it) so I know he knows what is going on. I have used this on a couple different bitches and I have had no carrying on (crying, barking or not eating)and one of the bitches was very messy and stinky. I do crate her in a different room with the door closed and the boys usually come with me when I leave. I crate them or lock them in my room when I take the female out to "potty" just to prevent any problems (or stick them in the car). This has worked for me - not saying it will work on all dogs, but a couple club members tried it and it made a difference with their dogs as well.

Board one of them elsewhere.

GS Mom Thanks for the reply. Sounds like it is worth a try. Personally I don't think boarding a dog is always the answer. I boarded a female once at a friends for well over the time one would think it was necessary. When she came home voile', my male acted like she was in full blown heat. She went out to the heated kennel for another week and all was OK. I don't know why this happened by IMO she just was upset and shut off her heat cycle until she got back home, I know it sounds weird but it happened. She also was at a place where there were other males that indicated she was "out". I don't think chlorophyll would be harmful and if it masks the odor enough to keep males eating, and the general pandemonium of heats down what is wrong with trying it? As long as you are responsible with keeping the dogs seperated like GS Mom states she does with hers.

OK. This works like a charm every time. Bundle up 7-8 fresh cut celery stalks. Cut the leafy bush off the top and throw away. Soak the celery stalks in the following mixture for 3 hours, in the fridge - 1/2 cup of molasses, 2 tsp baking soda & a dash of hot sauce. After it has soaked, cut the celery stalks in half. Rub the celery stalks on the genitals of said dogs until a filmy residue appears. This will kill all naturally occuring pheromone odors that attract the other sex.
