I've never heard of any direct correlation between getting females spayed after having pups/heat and then becoming aggressive. I don't doubt that you have witnessed this, but I'd be curious if there were any other contributing factors had led to the aggresive behavior. My purebred dachshund was was not spayed as a puppy but had a few heats and was spayed thereafter - she never became "cross" or attacked anyone.

And I do agree with everyone else on the second litter- you've stated that you're still playing with the idea but do take into consideration that there are always many, many homeless animals out there waiting for a home. You said you would be able to guarantee that all the pups would have a home, but wouldn't it feel great to say that you can guarantee 4+ homes for a dog(s) that was/were due to be euthanized?

Anyway, good luck with your girl and keep us posted.

The hormone changes of pregnancy can change the most docile animal into a raging, overprotective bear. There was one woman at the stable where I used to ride who was bitten on the face when she tried to look at the new foal a mare had given birth to. I used to ride this mare, and she had a very nice, gentle temperament.

Usually, the temperament returns to normal after weaning, but in some cases, it doesn't.

After my aunts dog had her pps she was fine, anyone could go and see the young ones and she didnt mind, i used to visit all the time. She only turned after she as spayed, almost like she was imbalanced from the lack of hormones. if you think about it, its like a human getting "fixed" after having one baby and she wanted another but now cant, a person would go into a depression and i believe this is what happened and when she attacked her first dog her energy changed forever.

Angie, to anthropomorphize like that (as much as we all love our dogs) is hardly a legit basis to  justify not spaying your dog. I would strongly suggest you speak to her veterinarian or another animal care professional and ask them about their experiences and the effects (hormonal or not) that the procedure could have on a dog. I won't bother trying to convince you or providing statistics because it'd just be beating this dead horse over and over again. And I kind of like horses. They're pretty cool.

i have never heard of a dog going aggressive  after being spay and i know many  people that did do this.  temp should not change ,  what could change is the age of the dogs mental state , meaning closer to the that adult mind set , that can change and i see it all the time , personallty its in the genes. i can say i have never had any of these problems and never will cause i am the boss and no dog will ever be aloud to go after another it wont happen as i  am a  hard bitch if i have to , its all about respect and control.  breeding a mix breed is not a good idea, her temp may need to be lower  befopre she whelps , mine usually go in the 97 degree area, and mine also dont go off feed and milk on my female does not come in till she goes into whelp, i would just watch her she will have the pups when she is ready.

Why is it a bad idea to breed a mix dog? I know she is getting close to whelping, any day now. I have a breeder that I can contact if i run into any more problems, thans to all.

why is it bad? Just google your local shelters.

Doing the rescue thing and specializing in pregnant dogs I have spayed dozes of females both mixed breed and pure bred and NEVER have I seen a female become agressive.  Abd dogs are not human no matter how much they may act like it.  They do not have the same feelings or emotions people do.  Personally I think they could care less if they ever had a litter.

I cannot belive that in this day and age with all the education out there about the over population of dogs someone would consider breeding more mixed breed dogs.
