I'm guessing the spine issue is pressing on the cord causing the bladder issues? Am I understanding that correctly? Because other than a prostrate issue, I would be guessing a tumor.

Well I heard back from my friend and it isnt going to be helpful. Apparently the dog she had showed up on her doorstep as a 8-12 week old pup, when it urinated it was bloody. She took it to the vet and after xrays it was shown that he was full of buckshot. From what they vet told her it was multiple shells shot at the pup. One bb nicked the uretha and that is why it had to be moved. Sorry it wasnt more help. Goodluck finding out whats wrong with Chance :)

melba, has the 'slipped disk' theory been confirmed via x-ray of the spine to identify said compression? I wouldn't expect a fever or elevated white count with a mechanical issue interfering with the urination, however.
Has lepto been ruled out? Must must must check for lepto. Too often overlooked these days.

I'm not certain if an x-ray of the spine itself was done, or if the vet is going off of the abdominal x-ray or if it is just a theory.
They think the elevated white count along with the fever is secondary infection due to the lack of ability to urinate.
I'll be able to talk with her further tomorrow.
I'll ask her about lepto.
She said that when she went to see him this morning at the vet that he acted slightly better.
I am really hoping for a miracle for both her and Chance. They truely were meant for each other... a heart dog
if you will.

omg- this is terrible. The ballooning bladder is not good. Once stretched its hard to get it to go back. That is what did Joss in. his bladder couldnt empty, once balloned, after he got SARS and aspiration pneumonia, after an MRI. he had to be catherized, which ended up giving him infections and his urine turned the color of dark tea, indicating kidney failure. I had to euthanize him :(
A slipped disk would be painful, though-was he exhibiting pain?

No, he was not exhibiting any pain prior to this. His weight has been taken down some, leads a pretty non working dog normal
life... 3 small stairs up into the house, doesn't jump on anything, no obvious reason for an exacerbation of a slipped disk if that
were the original problem. He's a normal house dog.
She said his urine yesterday was clear.
I should get an update here soon. She was supposed to get off work at 0200, so will be at the vet when they open.
Praying for some good news. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

This sounds an awful lot like another dog I know of was going through; his breeder is a friend of mine, and the dog's owner called her, heartbroken because the vet had told her that her 6 yr old dog was in advanced stage kidney failure and was unlikely to survive. Same type of presentation--dog was perfectly fine and then bam! fever, etc. Breeder told the owner to ask the vet to run testing for lepto, which was done, and the vet started treating for lepto before the results were even back. Dog improved vastly in next day or two, results came back conclusive for lepto, treatment continued, and dog recovered and is fine now.
That said, are you absolutely SURE they've been able to rule out antifreeze poisoning? It doesn't take much ingested to create the oxalate crystals that cause severe, permanant, physical damage to the kidneys..
