vomeisenhaus  and SitasMom  I think the only difference is that they type of tracking device used.  You are both talking about a type of tracking device where the dog is wearing a collar and you are holding a box and antenna.  I have used these here in florida hog hunting.  Their range depends on the unit you bought.  usually around a mile if I remember correctly.  The tracking device they are talking about is one that you have to call in and someone at a computer board tells you the location.   Vomeisenhaus  I agree any police department that is using their dogs tracking in the woods should have a tracking collar on their dog.  Just one more measure to keep your dog safe.  By the way where in northern Michigan was this?  I have no opinion on this issue just enjoying the intelligent back and forth and wanted to state the difference in devices.

Joanro... They use telemetry collars for research. Mt. Lion, Bears etc. I don't know anything about whales. But I know a little about the critters above. Seen a bear killed just last year with a telemetry collar. The DNR was not happy about it as it was in their research program. They was asked why is the collar BLACK and not orange as if they could tell it was a collared bear they would have left it.

Yep that's it.... They have new GPS collars now that can be obtained for a dog, or similar sized animal that has a battery life of 18mo. It is VERY EXPENSIVE and is taking the place of the telemetry system in research but telemetry is still used today. Telemetry tracking will be obsolete soon as I see Garmin has bought out Wildlife Materials Corp. who was one of the largest telemetry tracking co. I hope more affordable long life battery systems for gps is in the near future. But for now they only last a cple days and need recharged.

Yes rtdmm... What I don't like though is the short battery life of the new GPS system. A cple days isnt that long...lol. you could get 16000hrs with the telemetry system. Plus the GPS is like satellite tv. Bad weather and you lose signal. Some of the hound hunters around here will put both a GPS & a telemetry collar on their TOP DOGS because if this.
