I guess if a breeder has the mindset to cheat their buyers, they will find a way and vice versa.

Prager-you can almost say both go hand in hand. Yes,we all take our chances each and everytime we buy a new puppy. We hope for the best, and really I think we are expecting the best possible outcome for "our individual purpose" of getting a dog.
No one wants an issue with the pup we choose.
I just think the more people say, "all pups are a crap shoot", and if a problem developes, the breeder should not be free to say,"Oh Well, You knew getting a German Shepherd pup was a crap shoot anyway".
To me, that just leaves the door wide open for anyone to sell anything, and not care about the fallout from selling defective pups and dogs.
And my father told us, "believe NOTHING of what you hear, and HALF of what you see!

Sometimes it is not about getting another pup unfortunately.  I wouldn't have given this dog up for the world.  I couldn't afford to keep another dog with all the $$ I spend keeping this one alive Ezymes 180.00 every 2 mos, Eye drops 60.00 a month, a raw diet to keep her happy and healthy 100.00 a month. And also the time to care for another one.  I guess if you have multiple kennel dogs it would be easier but mine are housedogs.  So a replacment dog isn't always a good option.  Even though I wasn't even offered that.  But in reality the breeder had no way of knowing this would happen, she does her research too.  Hence I do believe the term "crap shoot" could be applied. All 3 of my GSDs had issues my first had a dysplastic elbow and hips that breeder wouldn't even return my calls and my youngest came from a kennel siutation and obviously never saw the light of day so he has fear issues.  However I must say the breeder offered to take him back and refund my $$ I chose to keep him.  At least this breeder was willing to step up and do the right thing.  He is physically healthy as a horse though!!  So in having such horrible luck with GSDs I switched breeds and got a border collie.  Knock on wood 2 years old a wonderful happy healthy great working dog!!

If getting tired of something really had an effect on the situation...I would try it in a minute. There are things you can control and there are things you can't control, and as the serenity prayer says, " and have the wisdom to know the difference between the two"......the reason people can give so many examples of let downs in this is because guarantees ARE useless....you may not like that, but you not liking it or being tired of it doesn't change a thing.....real talk!
this post is not directed at individuals but to the situation itself....if you want to only buy from a person with guarantees....that wonderful!, but don't come whining and crying when the pup develops things that this breed develops a lot, cause there was never a guarantee in first place and you put your blinders onSad Smile to that fact if you have read this post!

You see Gustav, YOU are fortunate in that you know what you are looking for, and more important, you know WHERE to go for what you are looking for.
For far too many people, they step blindly into a trap. And YES, a guarantee is only as good as the person offering it.
I see many guarantees that I wouldn't care if they were swore to in front of the Pope, that I certainly would steer clear of.
I guess. It is just me that has this big issue with that "crap shoot" phrase.
I just believe breeders should be accountable for what they produce.

Gustav, you're right. Good breeders do their best to turnout the best quality puppies. They do health testing, work with their dogs and train them, show them and everything else. They do pedigree research to try and find all the possible health issues in their breedings. Unfortunately sometimes non-perfect puppies turn up.

You are right, expect the unexpected. I myself have no problem replacing a defective pup IF one should pop up.
And I wouldn't make a buyer jump thru hoops to get it.
Do unto others...

Is it possible to create a check list for a buyer and post it some where on this forum to refer them too?  I am thinking along the lines of questions that a buyer should ask; things to look for (good, bad, warning signs)  in a breeder, kennel, and dog.

Most on this thread have extensive experience both as a breeder and a buyer.  If all could put our thoughts together for "here is what I wish the buyers would ask" or "here is what I wished I had asked," I think everyone would benefit in the long run.

my 2 cents, PPL LUV to say "i love my dogd they come first blah blah blah" in essence im plying that their dogs are mini ppl, part of the family ........., do u get a warrenty with ur kids? NO, and u shouldnt get one with ur pup, i believe ppl use that as an excuse to charge more money these are not mass production cars, so y u u feel entitled to a lemon law. im in germany where the dogs come from, and i bought both of my dogs here, they dont offer warrenties, they do what they can (and are required by law) to breed quality, and if u get screwed, oooops things happen. (i am one so dont think im a terrorist) FLIPPIN americans (and yes i can say this because ive lived in other contries and had an oportunity to c how pompas, and retarded we are bred to think) wit our entitlements. do your research and be happy wit what u get, BREEDING ANYTHING IS A CRAP SHOOT u can load the dice in your favor, but the facts remain the same, if it wasnt human babies wouldnt be born with illness
