Ok I normally stay out of these but this time I cannot.
I was you about 5 years ago. I came on here proudly announcing I had bred a litter and asked for advice on the male, who was much more dog than I could handle. At that time I was not really listening to the advice given by so many. After really researching and learning from these folks I finally got it thru my thick skull what needed to be done.
My male had really good DDR WL and the female a mix of WL and SL but nothing spectacular. Both were AKC registered. I felt that since I paid a small fortune ( for me at that time) for him and they were both registered I could get me a nice pup out of it and sell the rest. Well I did do that... ended up giving a couple of pups away to friends, sold a couple for 300.00 and the rest for what I could get, which was 100.00. All ended up high drive and a couple more on the agressive side. Luckily ALL of them had good hips without any dysplasia rearing its ugly head. I was sooo lucky you have no idea.. these dogs could have been walking vet bills just because I didnt do the needed research BEFORE I bred them.

YOU are still at the point where you can stop. Your dogs dont have what is needed to improve the breed which should be the focus of any breeding program.

All that said and done, you will breed them and get your 1 pup which will turn out to be not what you were wanting... You will do the best you can to get the rest into forever homes that will treat them good. BUT life happens and for whatever reasons some of those dogs might end up mean, bite someone, or family lacks funds and has to leave it at a shelter or dump it.

How will you keep your bitch from getting caught before you want her to breed?? Trust me, whateever you THINK you will do, throw that out the window cus a bitch in heat will fool you everytime. You will have the pleasure of dogs breaking thru your windows, shredding your doors and barking and howling all hours of the night, and that is just if you try to keep her in the house. I can hear you now.. " Yea that shows what she knows.. I will keep my bitch in her kennel, I WILL control her breeding" haha yea right... beent here done that.. 5 ft fence scaled like it was only an inch tall. I would suggest a wire TOP and wire BOTTOM for your kennel as well as double latch on the door with a lock only you have the key to. Think that is to excessive?? Then you dont know a GSD bitch in heat!! If you think it's easy selling gsd pups, try giving away mixed.. they are very difficult.

Take it from me, there are many many awesome dogs in shelters for you to choose a suitable companion or even put the money out to buy a pup and raise and train it the way you want. You dont have to breed to get a good pup.
Do me a favor before you actually embark on breeding... go to http://www.petfinder.com and put in your zipcode and German SHepherd  and see how many are waiting for homes or to die. Go to the webpages of your local shelters and see how many shepherd are waiting to die, google your local shepherd rescue and see how many AWESOME dogs they have.

I have Sarge waiting to go to his forever home, I pulled him from a local shelter, he was waiting to die. He appears to be a very well bred GSD, possibly Czech lines in there, he has been ob trained and who knows what other training. His most recent owner had him for 6 months, had to move to an apt and took him to a shelter cus he couldnt go to the apt. He was originally found abandonded in the yard of an empty house back in march. From the looks of him, I think someone paid a pretty penny originally.

Buy from a reputable breeder, dont become a BYB

Shandra/Therese--

Thank you for stepping forward and testifying to the veracity of what those of us here who are 'the mean ones' tell wanna-be 'breeders' such as Danica, here, and others with similar aspirations. Knowing that someone actually listened  to the advice, which is always given with what's best for the dogs as the primary motivation, is rewarding, and all the more so when it leads someone into helping save the life of good dogs that are already born.

Another reason for Danica not breeding her female. I found this while trying to help her fill in the holes in the pedigree:What Smile

That's not linebreeding, it's incest!  Sick

Therese, thank you from the bottom of my heart too.RoseRoseRose
Let us hope that Danica pays attention to what you
have said from experience, even if she takes no
notice of what anyone else says on here.

Breeding Brother and Sister??? OMFG!! that is so totally wrong. I know of breeders that breed mother to son, father to daughter but to me that is to close of a genetic pool but brother and sister?? They have the exact same genes, you are asking for trouble, I myself ( and I dont claim to know anything about it) would not even want one of the pups from that match.. sheeesh especially when you consider that THEIR parents are half bro and sis

by Blitzen on 25 November 2012 - 19:11

Brothers and sisters do not have the same gene pool unless they are identical twins.

by Blitzen on 25 November 2012 - 19:11

LOL that is a pretty tight pedigree, I guess it's about saving on a stud fee- just keep litter mates and take it from there..

Kudos on a very nice post, Shandra. I hope it makes an impression on Danica.

"Brothers and sisters do not have the same gene pool unless they are identical twins. "
Oh... I didnt know that.. How does that work if they have the same parents... and their parents are half bro and sis? I dont know the first thing about genetics lol I just figured it was like humans lol

take this tour on this link.  brothers and sisters don't share the same genes either.
