"Tylenol is perfectly SAFE to give a dog on occasion." This is a false statement. You should never give a dog acetaminophen (Tylenol). One of the saddest things I've ever seen when working at a Vet Hospital was a Rotti that was given children’s liquid Tylenol. The dog was very, very, sick. I sat with him for several hours until the owners decided to euthanize him. He was toxic and in pain. Over a day or two they fed him a bottle to bring down some pain he was having in his hips or elbows (can't remember which). They thought it was safe and went by the dosing instructions by weight. I was very angry about this, the dog died out of pure ignorance...if they had taken the time to call the vet for a recommended pain reliever the dog would not have had to suffer.

The Merck Vet Manual says..... acetaminophen (Tylenol)is one of numberous drugs that are considered hepatotoxins (drugs that cause liver dysfunction)....acetaminophen in cats have relatively small margins of safety....the recommended doseage for dogs is 15 mg/kg, four times a day as needed...it is contraindicated in cats.

Tylenol has the same warnings for people. If you think my statement is false you had better start contacting all the vets and specialists around North American as this is prescribed often. I am not saying it is the best choice, but it no more dangerous than Meticam, and these other pain releivers that are commonly giving/prescribed to dogs. After major surgeries these are often prescribed for SHORT termm use. They are not intended to longer term use like some other pain meds. My girl was on them for a week - 10 days after her majory surgery...had no issues. (and she was given tylenol 3 and percocet.) I have given it to my dogs on occasion and have no issues. AGAIN, this is NOT my first choice and I think there are many other more holistic options that are just as good.
