I tried coconut oil as well. My 11 month old male GSD gets jaw dropping explosive diahhrea if he receives any more than 1/2 teaspoon every few days. My female receives 1 teaspoon per day without any mishap.

laura271 - the same thing happened to my guys when i first started giving it, so I backed off and started with just a teaspoon for the first week or so and gradually increased the amount over time. Now they can consume a couple tablespoons at each meal. I make my girl with pancreatitis treats using boiled, shredded chicken breasts, a calcium supplement and coconut oil. I coat a small plastic freezer container with the oil, lightly pack the chicken/calcium mixture in the container, pour melted oil over the whole thing and freeze it. It's my alternative to giving her a turkey neck (I raw feed) or other bone. She tolerates the additional coconut oil very well, but, again, I did have to work up to that.

My lad gets diorrhea after a fortnight on a certain famous oil-based skin product;
I have tried 3 times, introduced it slowly and exactly as per instructions with the
bottle, he is fine for a few days ... then:  ooopps !
I wouldn't mind but it works !  He tends to have dry & itchy skin, with dandruff;  the
product does wonders for his skin and coat - but not for his digestion [which is
otherwise very good].
At least they have a sense of humour - when I told them I wasn't going to buy
another bottle, they sent me a free pack of their new probiotic powders !  And
kept me on the mailing list.
At the moment he is on SOS Salmon Oil, which I have used successfully with
other dogs - will see how that goes, have only just started using it.  But it is
good to hear the reports so far on coconut oil - I may try and get some to see
how it goes on Taz;  esp. if the Salmon Oil doesn't do good.

I mix about a table spoon of coconut oil with his probiotic and poor it over Prince's kibble twice a day. I just saw the holistic vet and he was very in favor of the coconut oil...

No dry skin on our dogs, or us humans for that matter!
Coconut oil is used for many things in our home,
the wife uses it almost exclusively for baking, always
for frying, and yes, it's added to breakfast smoothies,
used instead of butter on sandwiches etc.

Just start off by adding maybe 1/8-/1/4 tsp daily to your
dogs food. The diarhea may also be associated with the
'detox' work the CO will do as well, so it's possible to see
a dog almost regress to dry skin etc when first put on CO,
but that is part of the detox etc.

Is it a miracle worker? No. Will all dogs do great on it? No
But for those that it works on? well, it works great!

My male GSD has always been very sensitive to the fat content in his diet (he's raw fed). As others have suggested, I've had to very slowly increase any fat source in his diet. I've noticed that he tolerates Iceland Pure Sardine/Anchovy oil blend better than any other brand or even Iceland Pure's salmon oil. Explosive diarrhea just isn't any fun! My female isn't fat sensitive at all so she's the one that receives the coconut oil.

So Laura as I recall he is a young boy, and have you had an EPI eval done on him?  If so how did that come out?Nan

Hi Nans gsd - Neither of my dogs have EPI. Bosco is just a sensitive 90 lb guy. I sure wish Senta had EPI as it would make her bizarre refusal to eat understandable. :)

by LynOD on 23 October 2012 - 17:10

If Senta did have EPI  I can assure you she wouldn't be refusing any food.  EPI dogs are hungry dogs at least until they are stabilized.  They eat anything to no avail.  My EPI girl is tolerating the Coconut oil fine:)

I'm sorry- I wasn't being disrespectful to folks who have dogs with EPI. I get asked a lot if Senta has EPI since she's so thin but after many tests, the conclusion is that she's just really stubborn... I could have told you that from training her.
