Hexe, my thoughts exactly! So sad... Selfish and greedy people are what is ruining the breed.

Why is this topic under the conformaiton section of this website?
by Hutchins on 14 October 2012 - 17:10
Because I goofed up, when posting..
I didn't realize I was on the conformation forum. I thought I was on the general forum.. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Hexe, what's the scoop on ivomec not being effective as Hw preventative sometimes? Is it too low a dosage? Or are microfilaria developing resistance to it? Thanks.
by hexe on 15 October 2012 - 17:10
joanro, yes, there have been a few incidences where further investigation and testing showed the particular microfilaria involved in infection of individual dogs were resistant to the ivermectin; have even been reports of some resistance to milbemycin oxide [Interceptor] as well, though not as many instances and not as robust a resistance. As I recall, the majority of these resistant microfilaria were identified in dogs residing [and presumed to have been infected] in Georgia.

Oh, that's just great !:-/ Georgia isn't too far for skeeters to fly up here where I am. I'm suprized they weren't from Fla. Heart worm was so abundant there, that in the eighties there were cases of humans with heart worm and horses also. Poisons just get stronger as target develops resistance to current ones, that the dogs will be poisoned even more. Becomes a what's worth what situation.

Just a thought on this resistance subject; since so many people are using Ivomec, I think that under-doseing is likely a factor. My vet tells me too much is better than not enough dosage in order not to leave any survivors, which will in turn become resistant.

Other than all the meds in the dogs system and the hw itself (which i too have seen a few rescue dogs die from) I think it's ethically wrong to do. That would be a disclosure the breeder should be required to make but I am guessing won't as how many people would buy with this as an attachment to the puppy.
